Orchid Loss(es)

Bummer. I just went through mine and trashed a few of mine. I have now officially killed 4 Angraecum didieri. I just can’t seem to keep those alive. First one was potted, second in a basket, third one I tried to mount, and #4 was purchased already established on a mount. I have no clue what’s going on but something about my culture clearly is not right. My other 4 angraecums are doing good for me

My favorite Bulbo, my Bulbophyllum fascinator semi-alba, got half eaten by a giant green caterpillar, developed an infection and died. I need to replace that one for sure. And I think my Stanhopea NOID is mostly dead. It wasn’t in great shape to begin with when I got it on the raffle table last year and now most of the p-bulbs are rotted out. I will probably divide it and clean it up but I’m not holding out too much hope.

I don't want to brag myself but so far I only lost one orchid. It was a pbulb only but in a really bad shape.

Plus, my environment is very dry so....

You are either doing an excellent job or playing it safe with what orchids you buy. Either way, good job!

I'm very carefull about buying new orchids. They must adpat to my environment.

Yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with my rainy, humid climate. On one hand- most of my orchids grow like crazy with minimal effort. Things can stay outdoors most of the year and watering is mostly taken care of by the frequent rains. Even in our 35-38 Celsius days in the summer, the humidity helps buffer the heat and most are not bothered at all. On the other hand- when something starts to decline and rot, they decline fast. That awful humid, stagnant air has killed a few of mine. I added a fan to my courtyard last year and that helped a lot. (Still can’t keep that one angraecum species alive though, lol).

By other hand, starting now and up to october I must water everyday otherwise I lose at least half of my collection.
This means at least two hrs/day.

Today I have lost my Nervilia campestris, Im not sure why.

The leaves were drying and yellowing so I thought it was going into dormancy so I stopped watering, but instead the tuber turned squishy and shrunk (which as far as I know means the plant cannot be saved).

This has happened to me before but I have yet to find a reason it happens. It seems that one of the causes is the tuber disconnecting from the rest of the plant too early, which can be caused by mechanical damage or the plant itself, which is very strange.

I doubt there are many other nervilia growers, but I will ask anyway, does anyone know how to prevent this?

I may be wrong on some points, this info is just based on my experience and current knowledge.
