Question Cattleya-Log

Does anyone use it?? I'd like the pros and cons, please.
I need to keep better track of my orchids and it looks like a good program.

Thank you!
Tess

I use this. It's pretty good for keeping track of re-potting and general care of your cids. I haven't been using it enough to run the reports they have built into it though....I like that it has a "wish list", you can add or write a culture sheet and if you mark a plant as being "in bloom" it will ask you if you want to track the bloom dates for the next season... another plus is that it's affordable.

I don't like that as a user you can't add the "source" of where you got your cids...the programmer has all of that hard coded into the software. There are quite a few genus in the software but many of mine weren't listed so I had to add them - there is also a limit on how many characters the genus name of the orchid can be if you do have to add one.

A few of the nice things is that you can add the former or new names of a species in the "synonym" section (this option is only available if you indicate that the plant is indeed a species). The initial information screen has TONS of options for temps, current plant status, origin, and historical info...more than I CLEARLY know but useful none the less (maybe one day I know enough to be able fill that stuff in!) You can add many different pictures of the plant(s) and mark the one you like best as the "icon" picture on the general info screen.

I also read on their website that if you have some specifications you'd like to add, they will take it into consideration. I haven't tried that yet. You can also try it for free (fully functioning) for up to 10 plants but after that, you have to register your copy.

Let me know if you have any luck with it and if I can think of any other things about it, I'll keep you posted.

It's a daunting task , though, if you have several plants to just sit there and enter them in....certainly hard to remember when you purchased it and for how much (unless you have that information stored somewhere else)

You can add your sources, Dana...just double-click in the blank space rather than opening the list of pre-existing vendors.

As Dana said, it's a daunting task to enter a large collection in to the database. If you are thinking of getting it, do it before your collection is much bigger.

I recently had to wipe my hard-drive, and stupidly hadn't done a back-up so I lost all the info!!! I am in the process of re-entering over 300 chids...just names for now. I'll go back in at another time to enter the specifics.

Try the free version, which will allow you to enter ten chids...see if you like it. If you decide to buy it, it's really not too expensive and all future upgrades are free.
