"Orchid Catching" Experiment?

I was wondering if I can make a simple setup with moss and wait some time (Years) and then orchids would start growing on the moss.

Has anybody ever tried this? I'd like to try.
What would be a good "setup"? I'm thinking a mossy log with more wet moss/sphagnum.

It sounds like a fun experiment to try. I live where it is cold so I do not have experience with this but you can always see if anything happens for a while and, if not, plant a few orchids. Planting an orchid or two might introduce fungus to help the seeds grow. Good luck!

Do orchids prefer a type of tree to germinate on? Not a specific type, more like the type of bark. Do they like ones with more crevices better than smooth ones?

Sounds like a project for you. Observe orchids in the wild. Write a report for your sciencenclass.

I grow with moss a lot. Plants love it. It can really can help with humidity. My plants that grow in pure sphagnum, I just lay the fresh moss on top and grows very easy. In my plants that have bark I will sometimes put a thin layer of sphagnum, but not always. Depends how how sensitive to moisture the plant may be. I'll upload some pics later.
