Default Trader Joe’s

It’s hard to believe but Trader Joe’s orchids were my gateway drug to orchid growing. A few years ago, they used to have all types of orchids: of course phals but also oncidiums, epidendrums, odontoglossums, etc.

Has anyone experienced in the last year that they’ve pared down to only phals? I’ve been checking all the ones in Manhattan (Metro Area) NY and found nothing more than just phals. Anyone know why?

phals and oncidiums is what we have here a few other oddballs. Now people tell me they see all kinds at home depot all I see are phals and once in awhile cymbidiums.

I was a TJs orchid-aholic early in my orchid growing. And the ones near me at that time would usually have a lot more variety; For the last several years, it's been mostly slim pickings (if any) outside of Phals

Glad I'm not the only one! I've been trying to google for the reason behind it but to no avail

We do not have a nearby Trader Joe's but I am guessing the one near my daughter's college just has Phals as my husband has brought home two Phals from there for me in the past couple of years.

It is very rare to find anything but Phals in my area so I usually order online.

Hi
I bought a dendrobium nobile from trader Joe's in oregon. I'm relatively new to the world of orchids (2yrs) my first was a moth orchid rescued from a dumpster. I've got two more since then which are all phals. I mini phal not sure #3. All doing remarkably well. I've had to repot all 3 no problems. Back to my trader Joe's purchase the tag said "exotic orchid" the rest were the phals I'm used to. What I got was a dendrobium nobile which is too a phal. So yes trader Joe's here in Oregon seem to carry only phals as well.I'm happy with my birthday gift my den. Do not have a clue how to care for. I didn't have a clue How I was going to help my first orchid from a dumpster.

Buy Orchids and Orchid Supplies Online | OrchidWeb

Try checking this out if you still need basic care. I've actually never had a nobile-type of dendrobium, but good luck!

If I could dumpster dive for orchids to save, I would totally do it! I'm gross but that's truth.

Thank you for your comment. I would now dumpster dive for an orchid now. My husband did the dumpster diving for my very 1st. Since then I've contracted the orchid bug ( can't have enough) they make me happy

I no longer have easy access to TJs, but my old house had 3 within easy driving distance. I found that their selections varied considerably, with one NEVER having anything other than Phalaenopsis.
