Shipping Live Plants
What are the laws on this? I'm just a hobbyist, but want to ship a plant to a friend. Is this a state by state issue? I've received plants from different states, some of which have had agriculture certificates on the box. Would I need to do this, or could I just send them. Or should I say that it's fruit or cookies?

id wrap it up, put it in a box, mark it perishable and let it go. i don't think it would be a problem. but i wouldn't go looking for trouble. ignorance is bliss

Unless you're planning on shipping across any borders, there's no problem. Pack it carefully and mark the package as Perishable or Fragile, ship it Priority Mail.

Why priority? Would Fed-Ex or UPS work?

Sure...it's just easier for me to get to the P.O.
Any way you do it, make sure it's a short time period for shipping.

Andy's ships there's marked "Live plants". So I don't think there's any need to hide the fact you are shipping live plants within US boundary. Now across border may be another issue.

I know when it comes to citrus you can not ship to certain states. Cali. AZ. ect... and they are not allowed to ship to Florida. Probably because it is a food product that can affect commercial growers.

The reason citrus can't be shipped is because of some diseases. Citrus Canker is the main one, and it originates in Florida. I think thz USDA is afraid of speading these diseases to other big citrus producing states.
I don't think it's a problem to ship plants within the USA.

Tell me about it I lost 3 citrus tress (lemon, grapefruit, and sour oranges) not to canker but because I was (according to inspectors) to close to infected trees. They cut them down and told me I would not be able to replant until they said it was OK. Since Hurricane Wilma they decided they could no longer control this, they lifted the band and I now have four new trees for about a year now. (Blood orange, 2 tangerines, and a ruby red grapefruit)
