Default Share random things thread

A thread to share your random funny experiences and things that don't fit in any other thread.

I'll start.
A few days ago I ordered a Bulbophyllum Echinolabium (arriving today (probably)!) and I got the tracking number and for whatever reason it said that the contents were "crafts"!!

Good luck with your new one!

I grow my orchids indoors, especially during the winter (temperature is currently -17'C) so my orchids either need to smell pleasant or not at all. A few years ago, I finally admitted that I absolutely adore Builbophyllum. There is just something about them.... Fortunately, there are many Bulbophyllum without a strong odor and even some that are pollinated by fruit flies and smell pleasant. (If I could grow them outdoors year-round, I would not care about the 'fragrance.')

Someone from our OS gave me a Bulbophyllum carunculatum (brense form). When reading about it, I learned that the flowers' fragrance is not very pleasant but I figured it was one where a person would need to put their nose close to the flower as I had not heard of it being famous for odor. Talking with the vendor who had sold the seedling, I mentioned this. His reply? When the parent is in bloom, he smells it as soon as he enters the greenhouse. Opps.

The same person who gave me the carunculatum gave me another seedling whose ID had been lost. Fortunately, it comes from the same vendor so he will be able to identify it when it blooms. I just hope it will not have as strong an odor. :|

Not drawing any conclusion from the label, but Indonesia has numerous plant import restrictions, permit requirements, & etc. The vast lists are to protect Indonesian agriculture, and in fact some of the interesting statutory lists will have the name of the particular bug that Indonesia is trying to avoid having imported.

No I never order from outside Java because of import laws and slow shipping and I know that it is allowed to send plants through mail here.
