You might want to try the way that the real good vendors that sell through mail orders pack them.
They use tightly folded (creased) newspaper, masking tape to strap, ....packaging peanuts or easter basket grass to secure the medium and bubble wrap can also be incorporated.
In this case (your's) you'll want to save space while safely wrapping to limit any damage to the plants. Take your time and do it carefully and you should be well pleased.
