I will be travelling from Lousiana to Columbus this week and I am intending to buy two small orchids that should easily fit to my backpack. I was wondering if I am allowed to bring orchids with me as a carry on item. I will have no suitcase and I would need to pay for luggage which is not something that I want.
The airport inspectors where you originate a flight in the US are not concerned with plants. Louisiana may have regulations regarding bringing in plants. I doubt they inspect all the luggage because this would be too time and money consuming.

For flights inside the USA there should be no problem, but to be sure, call the airlinne well in advance, explain where you are flying from/to and what you are carrying.
If you are flying from Louisiana to Columbus, OH, (from a fire ant state to a non-fire ant state), they might ask you to transport bare root.
The key is, be above-board with the airline to avoid troublle.
