I see. Don't they make mini clothes dryers for small apartments? I thought I have seen some countertop ones. Or maybe a terrarium with lights? Forgive me for trying to "fix" things.I can't imagine a life without an orchid...

Clothes are hung out to dry on clotheslines, in windows or on furniture in many parts of the world. You may find it strange, probably the way we felt when we got to the USA and thought "but clothes need fresh air" to dry, smell and feel good.

In Phoenix they're often dry before you get the second clothespin on them. LOL

I can hear it now from younger members: "What's a clothespin?"

We had a washing machine but no dryer back in the day........and clothes had to be thoroughly ironed - because of

Human Botfly (Dermatobia Hominis) and Tumbu Fly (Cordylobia anthrophaga)

As a tween I got these. All I remember about this episode was an itchy back and lying on my stomach in hospital while a nurse squeezed the larvae out. Somebody didn't iron properly !

Or as one neighbor puts it (fortunately this one speaks fluent english) "I like the smell of the sun!" Upon hearing about this type of "smell," I started putting my nose to the drying laundry, and after some practice, I think I "got" it too...

No it's not because they can't afford it, believe me, thai people are creatures of comfort - they would spend money on comfort over food. It's just that the idea of drying clothes "un-naturally" goes against the grain of their "living in harmony with nature" philosophy. The smell of the sun is basically a stamp of good-housekeeping upon a housechore properly completed, in this case, clothes drying. [Or maybe they're like the Mayans, it's a token of sun-worshipping?]

Now there's a recent addition of a small, compact (and obviously "pre-owned") dryer to the half-dozen of coin-op washers in our laundry coop. With a sparse instruction band on top that says :"requires (a coin of) 10 baht to start," it stands apart from the rest; lonesome, stoic and indifferent to the indifference it faces in regards to its raison d'etre.

To your big sigh of relief, Dolly, no, I won't go for a life without orchids either. Even though I sometimes could be accused of treating orchid plants as cut flowers, I valiantly march on with them. Here is a pic of the mokaras (I now have two) which seem to be doing ok on the balcony.

Wow, that's alarming ...I probably should start ironing my clothes - the process of which shall begin with the purchase of an iron - which has never been part of my travelling knicknacks. Maybe it's time (and sign) for me to settle down...

You are a good sport and your or orchids look happy, too. I was raised on a farm and, yes, clothes from the clothesline do smell different.

Not that this matter keeps me awake at night, but I was thinking about it before going to bed last night and this seems to be the answer: dryers generate hot air, and for the local people, who favor air-conditioning on a large scale at anytime of the day, this is a no-no. I hear them complaining about heat almost on a daily basis, whereas I, coming from another part of the world, accept the fact that here I live inside an on-warm oven and go on with my daily life. Same answer for why the swimming pools are not heated, fact is, again for the local folks, tap ( is it with a b or a p, learning thai has mixed up all the alphabet for me) water already is often too warm/not cool enough for them (ditto for having or not having hot&cold taps in your bathroom).

[Amazing the kind of answers to your life-changing question you get when posting on this board....]
