Or as one neighbor puts it (fortunately this one speaks fluent english) "I like the smell of the sun!" Upon hearing about this type of "smell," I started putting my nose to the drying laundry, and after some practice, I think I "got" it too...
No it's not because they can't afford it, believe me, thai people are creatures of comfort - they would spend money on comfort over food. It's just that the idea of drying clothes "un-naturally" goes against the grain of their "living in harmony with nature" philosophy. The smell of the sun is basically a stamp of good-housekeeping upon a housechore properly completed, in this case, clothes drying. [Or maybe they're like the Mayans, it's a token of sun-worshipping?]

Now there's a recent addition of a small, compact (and obviously "pre-owned") dryer to the half-dozen of coin-op washers in our laundry coop. With a sparse instruction band on top that says :"requires (a coin of) 10 baht to start," it stands apart from the rest; lonesome, stoic and indifferent to the indifference it faces in regards to its raison d'etre.
To your big sigh of relief, Dolly, no, I won't go for a life without orchids either. Even though I sometimes could be accused of treating orchid plants as cut flowers, I valiantly march on with them. Here is a pic of the mokaras (I now have two) which seem to be doing ok on the balcony.
