Bil's anecdote is timeless. I've encountered similar in Art and Ethics (museum on fire, you save the Rembrandt or the old lady-and it's alway an old lady, not an old gentleman, what's with that?). Tastes and style are always changing but there is an undefinable something that has traversed time and civilizations. Humanity has tried to rationalized it with "golden ratio" and Fibonacci numbers but it is more than that.
Unless you are a business, acquisitions reflect our self worth. Other's judge you based on your "stuff" (or that is our perception). You have pretty things or you have frivolous things. Life would be pretty bleak without some pretty things. To non-orchid people, we are orchid braggarts.
The crazy part: demand goes up, prices go up because demand goes up. The item is the same.
