Bummer. Just did the same damn thing repotting/mounting a Denphal. Inspected the roots, rotated it, it slpped slightly, I tightened my grip, and one finger was right on the damn shoot.

I have many goofs, but the latest goof is the one that really hurt the most. And it happened last weekend.

I have always wanted to have a keiki grow out on a phal spike. Don't really know why, but it is just something I have always looked forward to happening. Five years growing orchids, and still not a single keiki on any orchid.

I have a phal equestris that has been blooming for about the past 5 months, pumping out new flowers as the old ones die. The spike grew to over one and half feet in length, which is really not ideal because I have it in a terrarium and it was getting harder and harder to accommodate that growing spike. So last week I decided to just go ahead and cut the spike - did so without carefully looking at the spike. After I cut the spike, I noticed a tiny keiki growing near the end of the spike! I could not believe it! Praying for a keiki for five years, finally get one and cut the damn spike!

I put the spike in water hoping I could keep the keiki alive, but the whole thing just shriveled up after a few days.

I know Bletilla striata's culture. My mom filled that strip between the street and the sidewalk with them. My sister has them at the foot of her patio.

So why am I overwatering them?

I blame it on the water lovers near it!

Joseia - I too have an equestris and have already harvested a keiki. Then it threw out 3 spikes which kept on growing with no signs of a keiki on any. I cut off the oldest spike and within 2 weeks keikis started growing on the remaining 2 and another spike has started. Maybe this is something you could also do eventually?

Thanks for that idea, I will definitely try it. I have a phal hieroglyphica with 7 spikes, I will give it a try on this one.

Last month when moving the new Dracula lotax into sphagnum, I accidentally broke off two new growths. It is so delicate! Fortunately, it is keeps putting out more new growth. I think it has forgiven me.
