2017 Project?
Default 2017 Project?

I noticed that there has been no further activity on the other project. Perhaps we want to try again? This time, let us all work together to make the project a success. To make that happen, I have come up with a few rules to follow for making suggestions for the project. For the orchid to be considered for the project, these rules must be followed (I know, rules are never fun but we do want the project to be successful.) The same orchids can be suggested that were in the first attempt as long as these rules are followed. Please do not post suggestions if you are not including the required links and information with the suggestions. Thank you.

Rule 1: A specific species should be chosen.

Rule 2: Each suggestion must be accompanied by a link to growing/culture information so that people can understand how the suggested plant is to be grown.

Rule 3: Each suggested orchid must be easily available and accompanied by links to:
a) A vendor in Canada where the orchid is offered
b) A vendor in Europe where the orchid is offered
c) For the US, either a large vendor who has a large supply of the orchid or several smaller vendors that offer the orchid.

Rule 4: Please include the price(s) for the orchid. The orchid should not be too expensive. We do not want cost to prohibit anyone from participating.

Rule 5: Please choose something that does not need extensive modification to grow. A bowl/vase is fine but requiring a modified wine cooler or misting system is a bit extreme.

Rule 6: Include whether the orchid is cold-cool, cool-intermediate intermediate, intermediate to warm, or warm to hot growing.

Here are some useful links:

Here is a good Canadian orchid place: Species

Here is a site that list other Canadian vendors:
Canadian Orchid Vendor List | The Canadian Orchid Congress

Here is a link to post on this board with a list of some European Vendors:

Orchids Vendors in Europe

Some general information for many species orchids:

So, if anyone is interested, let us give it another try!

Here is my 2 cents, on this. Since no one can make up their minds about what to do. Pick one of the rupicolus lealias, any one of them. And have this years project be rupicolous lealia ( anyone of them) that you chose to grow, your choice. If you like miniature ones pick one of those, if you want cold-cool growing ones chose one of those. It seems like people are interested in trying to grow these ( 9 out of the 23 people who voted) so chose for yourself what kind you would like to grow. There are ones that will suit just about any conditions you want. They come in mini, miniature, small, medium sizes. Pick one that fits you. They grow in all temps, cold-cool, cool-warm, warm-hot, pick one that suits you. Test your skill and knowledge with a less common one or pick an easy one that has been grown successfully for years. There never seems to be a lot for sale , but if everybody choses a from a few different ones that are available maybe there will be enough for everyone's liking. And we can exchange the knowledge,we gain from this. Is this not the purpose of this, the learning and exchange of knowledge? Many people can be intimidated by the unknown or have heard horror stories about how hard these are to grow. Now days there is a lot of information out there. On how easy some of these can be to grow, even for the most novice growers. So pick one ( or two or more) of these that suit you, take that leap of faith, and get on with it. Just my 2 cents!
Sorry, Leafmite, if I did not follow the rules

A suggestion from someone unlikely to participate (objectivity!).

Choose a plant from Ecuagenera or another vendor that travel widely. Contact them to see what specie/hybrid they have in surplus. I use Ecuagenera as a example since they are the source for many vendors (plus mark-up).

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with any vendor other than as a retail customer.

Laelia Dayana (Cattleya Bicalhoi)

Culture Requirements + Pics: IOSPE PHOTOS

Culture Requirements also on Andy's. Appears to be intermediate to warm growing.

Vendors:

US: Andy's Orchids ($32)
Canada: Species (they say limited supply)($28-34)
Europe: Laelia - Pflanzen (27.9 euros)

I will thoroughly admit that I have not extensively searched through all of the vendors as I don't have a ton of time to do so.

Anyone down with Selmos suggestion and making the project this year "rupiculous laelias" and just everyone picking out their own. I think it would be fun and most certainly better than no project at all.
