Orchid Buying Guideline for 2017
Default Orchid Buying Guideline for 2017

I am pleased that I have decided on a guideline that I think I can follow without feeling so restricted I totally rebel. I know it is very modest, but I am currently sleeping on a folding couch in someone else's rental.

I will not look at Trader Joe's orchid's within two weeks of buying one. I may buy at most one orchid per calendar month.

I am calling these guidelines because I anticipate occasions when I choose to not follow them.

I am a windowsill grower, and my collection of about 15 orchids was given away this past June, due to a decision to sell and downsize my home.

These guidelines should keep me in bloom while not denying me the thrill of orchid hunting. I currently have 3 Phals that I have taken over from my room mates, Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Red Fantasy', an unlabeled Zygopetalum, and my newest, a Paph. Hsinying Alien (blooming).

Good plan! I am likewise limiting the number of new orchids I am purchasing. Since August, I have bought three orchids. I am doing pretty good for the other plants, too. I waited until there was a good sale and bought a few I have been wanting for a while.

Tomorrow is the day I commute past a Trader Joe's. Wish me strength to not stop in! (I am making up excuses to look, even though I bought a plant a week ago.)

My DIL brought home a shriveled up Bromeliad (Tillandsia?) yesterday. My guidelines say nothing about gift plants. It has found a home wedged in the plastic food container holding one of my orchid pots.

I also have a personal guideline I adhere to. Quite strictly, in fact. When I'm broke I don't buy orchids. I'm broke these days; though it's a good thing since space is VERY limited.

Good luck! What I have been doing is making myself wait a few days before purchasing. It has really been helping.

This will work for me with online purchases, but not when hunting for random treasures at Trader Joe's. On the other hand, I only go past there once a week (and probably only monthly after awhile.) Good think the commute is about an hour!

Good luck, then. Personally, I am concerned about the upcoming show season. Ecuagenera usually comes to the Strongsville Ohio show and I work at our own show which means I often see the orchids before our show opens. Last year, I went a little crazy....

Yes, there is a big show here in mid-March. I don't own a car, so I am limited to what I can carry at one time and also to shows that are convenient to bus lines.

I have moved to an area where I think Cymbidiums can be grown outdoors. But I don't know if I will have an outdoor area for orchids. That could be dangerous to my wallet!

I wish I had the willpower to stick to a plan. Only thing that keeps me from buying one every week is my very limited growing space. I basically have to get rid of one before getting a new one. When I was a newb and killed them frequently, not a problem. But it's been a while since I killed one, which is good, but I am itching to buy one.

This has taught me that something I really want is often not available when I go back.

You can request an Uber van for the ride home.
