After writing two posts, I think orchid people are nuts!
We rationalize desire. We convert fahrenheit to celsius, we look up the altitude of the hillside where plants naturally grow. We know the meaning of "microsiemens". We grumble about the latest changes in taxonomy.
All because we covet the ephemera of a bloom.

See? This is one of my main reasons for living in the South. 6 or 8 inches here in the Atlanta area would essentially debilitate the entire state, with probable need of FEMA assistance and the National Guard. A couple of years ago we had what was called "Icepocalypse", where a mixture of ice and snow literally shut the Atlanta area down for a couple of days. I work about 30 miles, or an hour's drive, from home. The library closed early so I left work at 2:00 in the afternoon. Between the falling ice and the utterly stupid and bedeviled Georgia drivers I was on the highway until 11:30 the following morning. (As an aside, things finally ground to a halt at around 4:00am, so I took a nap, waking at about 6:30. When I awoke there were literally hordes of people who lived nearby and came out onto the road just to bring cups of hot coffee or tea to those of us stuck there. Southern hospitality is indeed alive, and another reason I love it down here.)

Scrubbed all 7 dog crates today. Did some watering, too. I came down with a cold Thurs - today. Couldn't sleep last night due to stuffed up nose, and today the faucet opened. It's like Tim Benzedrine fighting with the Nozdrul. I'm going to take a decongestant tonight because I need to work in the morning. I limit decongestant intake because for me, after 3 or 4 doses it stops working.

Well, yesterday was my Father in Law's memorial service. It was held a half a light year and one time zone away. Nice service, no violence in the family.
Today I made a fresh peach pie (yes, home made crust) just before the relatives slid in. It took them about 4 hours to make an hour and a half drive. Nice visit. Got to meet my adult niece and nephew whom I had never laid eyes on before. Nice "kids." They were on their way to catch a flight to Vegas via Midway but, stopped here on their way to another time zone to see their Grandmother (my MIL) in the nursing home. There have been 4 deaths in our life this last month. I am frankly, sick of funeral homes.
On a bright note, I looked at my Den L. "Little Atro" today as I watered and see that it is covered with little "nubs" that I assume will be flower spikes! I am so excited!
I also decided enough dithering about lights. I am getting an attractive fixture and I will figure out the K's and L's later. Sometimes too much info is just too much info.
And, I may have to change my avatar to Dolly the Hon. She has been undergoing a personality change and decided she actually might like us.
BTW, John and Charles...my niece (40) was captivated and taking videos of our bird feeders and snow. I guess in CA they don't have that kind of weather. LOL
Have a great week everyone!

12/18: Happy Orchid Sunday to everyone! I sincerely hope that yours is a fine day. Here in Georgia it's warm this morning (70 when I left home) but the temperature will fall throughout the day, to about 40 when I leave work. Naturally it's also rainy. Bah.
I almost overslept this morning, meaning the dogs didn't get quite their usual time outside. They didn't seem to mind too much, with 2 of the 3 being really against the idea of being outside when it's wet. Hopefully, I'll be able to get them some good exercise this evening.
The orchids were also all but passed this morning. A part of the daily routine is to water all mounted orchids, but usually I also take the time to look, touch, and commune. Not today! However, all are looking pretty good. I have quite the abundance of Phal roots, a good thing, but my Rhyncholaelia digbyana is really astounding me - I've never seen such a proliferation of new roots as it's been spewing! There's just a few plants presently in bloom, but spikes galore.
I hope you all have a great week!

Happy Orchid Sunday. I'm listening to some streaming music while watering.
In 1978 I moved to San Francisco for school. I found a great radio program Sunday nights on KPFA, the Berkeley public radio station. It was then called Music from the Hearts of Space. Stephen Hill played music I had never heard before - he called it space music. It now might be called "ambient", but that doesn't really do it justice. It was music from all over the world; acoustic, synthesized, vocal, instrumental.
Each week had a different theme. Occasionally it was way out there, but most of the time it was just amazing. I kept listening for 4 years in SF, then Seattle, Tucson and Phoenix. Then it went away. NPR dropped the program.
I didn't think to look for it on the WWW until several years ago. It's now called Hearts of Space, and it's a subscription service. The current weeks' program is free to stream each Sunday (Pacific time, UTC -8) if you register.
I think you might enjoy this weeks' program:
"Winter settles in, and we seek warmth and the immediate satisfaction of familiar things: food, fire, friends, and the traditional sounds of acoustic instruments. The resonant overtones of fine wood and crystalline steel on instruments like the guitar, the Celtic harp, and the hybrid "harp-guitar" take on a special glow.
In our fast-moving world of electronic technologies, it's easy to forget that for thousands of years acoustic instruments were the alpha and omega of musical experience — limited in sonic range and variety, but not in subtlety, depth, or expression.
On this transmission of Hearts of Space, sparkling acoustic sounds to warm the winter soundscape, on a program called COMFORT AND JOY 3."

Today everybody's a musician or a singer, even if the playing is done by the computer and the singers use auto-tune.
I think birds should not be allowed to fly 'cause today I had to wash my car. It was covered by bird %$&/ and it damages the painting ( and my car is new).
Anyway, today watered some orchids and spent part of my morning marking wood ribbon to built a basket for my catt. Couldn't find the size I want so....

Well, we have had quite the streak of winter weather. I had to buy some adorable Muk LUKS. Snow blowing the drive with toasty toes now! It has been in the 20s and below for the last couple weeks. Last night it snowed maybe 8" more. The bird watching is fantastic and the black squirrels are strong enough to haul away while ears of corn. Great cat video!
Picked the truck up from the body shop minutes before the ice storm last night and all events locally were cancelled.
Today, more baking. My father in law loved good fruitcake. He loved my lemon fruitcake (no comments till you taste it). So, I decided as a memorial to send a small one to each brother. That's next on the list.
Estacion, I used to love that music. I guess my taste has declined in my old age.
Well, off to the laundry! Hope your week is great, all. Take some time to be grateful!!!
