Is there any special reason that this board signs me off so much?
Seems as though when I go away from it for a few and then come back I am logged off and have to sign on again.

I thought that that might be a good idea but I am usually on a shared PC and I didn't want it to remember my sign on after I sign out.

Yeah, if you don't have cookies enabled or you don't allow it to remember you, you will get signed out every time you close the site.

I just wander away with a new tab

Are you closing an actively open tab of OB then heading somewhere else? I'm so used to using cookies and such that I never have these issues. . . The only reason I could see it logging you out is if you close the only currently active tab of OB you have open and then trying to reopen it. But that doesn't make sense, because cookies should keep it open (unless I'm wrong in this thought train) until you close your browser. You might need to take a peek at your cookie settings.

Works but as suspected I am signed on continuously log off, shut down or whatever.

Then I suggest you teach yourself a little discipline. You'll need it with orchids, too, if your collection is growing.
