Default A girl and orchids...

My three year old loves to help me water my orchids. She talks to me while we do it and asks me all sorts of questions about the plants. In fact, I think that I have corrupted her because when we drive by stores that normally have plants out in the spring/summer to sell she always says, "there's no orchids outside now because it's too cold". I have had multiple conversations that all flowers aren't orchids, lol!

Yesterday, while we were watering, she surprised me by what she said. Here's our conversation (and for reference I have 100+ plants):

Daughter: Mama, I think we need more orchids. We don't have enough.
Me: We don't? Why do you think we need more?
Daughter: Because they are pretty and fun to water, we need lots of them.
Me: How many more do we need?
Daughter: We need five more!!!
Me: Are you sure five? Or do you think 10 or 20?
Daughter: Twenty!!! We need twenty more orchids, Mama! (All said while she jumped up and down with excitement.)

I think that I may have someone to share plants with in the future...

I got a good chuckle. This past weekend my Dad and I toured Carter & Holmes, Carolina Orchids, Daniel Stowe Botanical gardens. I only wanted to buy what $50 would bring. 20 orchids and $160 later (my dad bought his fair share) I am still shaking my head where I am going to put them. I guess I need to go the psychiatric ward as I am too old for child protective services...

My kids have always been surrounded by plants. Orchids in the house, wild natives on the property, various others scattered here and there. Before we moved they would help with prescribed burns on the Savanna restoration. They also have been active participants in butterfly surveys, various field trips and work days with the native plant societies, state parks, bird watching and data collection for census, etc... They start in utero and proceed from backpack carrier, to barely walking, to running full throttle. It has instilled a love of nature and an ability to see the finer details of creation in them. Keep enjoying the plants with her and especially the conversations. My 3 year old amazes me everyday with what she does and especially with what she observes and understands.
