Whoa, too cool! Since this is within the topic, Optimara (African Violets) sent many seeds to space for 5 years. They got them back to earth to grow them and now anytime you see an African Violet with "EVER" before its name, it's one of the space violets.

At least as early as 2001 Arabidopsis thaliana, a flowering plant commonly used in physiological and genetic studies, was grown through a full generation seed to flower to seed on the ISS, and I doubt it was even the first. It seems this Zinnia is at least 15 years or so late to be the first flower in space. So many plants have been grown in space it is hard to believe flowers haven't been somewhat common. Someone at NASA has a selective memory and needed a story on a very slow news day.

The first flower we know of to bloom outside the earth's atmosphere. All flowers bloom in space.
