I like your insight. Anime fans often misinterpret the underlying culture behind the genre much as the orchid crazies misinterpret the orchid grower subculture, carrying their interpretations to extremes in some cases.

One common misconception seems to be:

"The more plants I have, the more hardcore orchid addict I am."

Truth is, anyone with a paycheck can go out and spend it all on orchids. I'll take the hobbyist with ten hand-picked, immaculately grown orchids over the impulse buyer with dozens of bought-in-bloom Trader Joe's plants any day.

I feel like there's some integrity at stake here.

I still think some people are just attention whores but away from the anonymity of the board, I'm pretty introverted. That's the perspective I'm coming from. That's personality.

The degree with which someone loves orchids is another matter. For example, I love music. I don't sing (fortunately for the people around me), I don't play an instrument, I don't know squat about Baroque progression nor do I know the latest hits. That doesn't diminish my appreciation of Bach or Jimi Hendrix.

There is some skill and dedication required to rebloom a Trader Joe's NoID Phal, that shouldn't be discounted. Does an orchid lover need to graduate to species? Wage a bid war over a rarity on ebay?

I just love that video!

depends on your definition of 'crazy'. But eccentrics don't have to have money. There are numerous examples, but I like this one. A great story, with a human eccentric in there somewhere.

Cute story. I wonder what will happen when the cat dies? It's 14. I guess they will get another cat that looks similar? I like the pictures on the mugs and the train.

My wife credits the plants with curing her of severe eczema that she has had for the past 7 years. She suffered from this throughout the year, with it being particularly bad during the dry winter. As the number of plants increased, her eczema started to lessen in severity. She hasn't had a breakout of eczema in nearly a year now, which is a miracle for her. Of course, no idea if the plants have had anything to do with it, but who knows?
My plants make it easy for me to breathe in the winter by keeping the humidity high. I have always had difficulty breathing when the air is too dry. So, really, collecting plants has been the perfect hobby for me. I also like the beauty that they provide and it is good to know that they filter out the pollution. The air in an enclosed home smells much fresher, too.

And see? Now you have a great excuse to collect plants, too.

I'm not one of those people crazy over everything/anything, but I tend to smile and like to have them around.

It makes it fun to have people so passionate about something they do things others might look on as crazy. I'm too serious, I know I'm too serious and I actually admire those who aren't and have some fun in the process and it makes me feel lighter and happier to have them around.

Yes sometimes the fire of their obsession burns out, but they had fun while they were at it, sometimes the fire of their obsession settles down to a true long term hobby and like Ray said, they may even become a befit to the hobby for the rest of us.

A while back a member here was light and fun and to my mind breathed a breath of joy and silliness and fun into the board that I loved. She left because a member contacted her to say that we didn't want her style here on the board. She wouldn't tell us who it was but I was fuming that person had NOT spoken on behalf of the board as a whole and had not spoken on behalf of the moderators/admins. I tried to encourage her to stay but she wouldn't. I'm a serious person, but in my view it's our loss when we loose people with the light fun and even silly outlook on life/orchids.

I can't change who I am, I've tried at times, and it just makes me unhappy trying to be who I'm not. Don't get me wrong, I'm really happy in my own way, but I need those light, happy, silly people around me. My world is a happier place for seeing them have fun.

So here's to the self professed crazies and the maniacs. Some of us serious people really love to have you arround!

Some people just do these things because they enjoy the way it looks and want to be themselves. I was a teen in the eighties when it was considered okay to wear different styles and no one really stood out for it. You could think freely and be yourself. :|
I feel the same way about orchids. I don't always like the awarded one; sometimes I prefer the one that is rejected. I sort of hate the judging of plants because it is used to 'refine'/alter them from what they initially were. Many species orchids/plants don't look at all like what actually grows/grew in the wild. I love the species Angraecums because not many have messed with them yet and they are still quite beautiful and fragrant! I think, sometimes, too, we get a herd mentality about what we should like/what our tastes should be in orchids instead of deciding for ourselves what we actually do like. Hybridizers seek to change orchids to fit a certain ideal. I find that pretty sad. Uniqueness is what makes something special.

You probably were not the only one. I cringe just a little when I look at pictures of myself from the seventies.
