As for the criminal plant attack...if it was at night it could be a raccoon. Or a few of them! We have some really ornery ones around here and they have done all sorts of things that I wouldn't expect. It's the young ones that are most mischievous and I've had pots knocked over and upturned and if you get a couple of them playing/arguing over something then the poor plant can be dragged for a distance before they figure out it's not a good snack or they decide the fun is over.

My cat does that in the house. She dosen't give a hoot about how I want my orchid area to be, she plows into them. I would guess a cat, raccoon, possum, or chupacabra (the red kind, not the blue kind).

I had the good fortune of touring the gardens of an 85 year old neighbor of my moms a few weeks ago. They were amazing and she still does all the work herself. I noticed that she had one or two plastic forks, with the tines facing up, in each of her pots. I asked her about them and she said "squirrels". She said she had had all kinds of trouble until she started using the forks. It seems that the squirrels get hung up on the forks, and not liking that, they stay away.
