Default Monthly Status Reports - February 08

Here's what's happening at my house this month. Say, where's Shakkai been?

In Bloom:

Phal. equestris - also growing a new leaf, roots, and a Keiki.
B. nodosa – is just about finished. Also growing a new lead.
Aerangis luteo-alba rhodostica - still in bloom, dropped 3 flowers, growing a new leaf and 3 new roots.
Epi. Pak Girl x Pacific Embers - after mushing the spike into the bottom of the
upper shelf only one flower bud survived and opened 2/2. It looks like there may
be another bud emerging from a lower node.
Den. Frosty Dawn – 2 flowers open, a bunch more to go.

In Spike:

P. bellina – just finished growing a new leaf, has 1 existing spike not in bloom,
and a baby spikelet that hasn’t grown since I got it in July.
P. NOID White Magenta Lip – growing a single new spike. First new spike for
me
P. NOID Birthday White – growing double spikes! Also first new spike for me.
Dtps. Malibu Merlot – growing a single new spike. Also first new spike for me.
Den. NOID nobile – has a single bud on an old cane. Am hoping for more on the
newer cane
Paph. delenatii – growing a spike with 2 flower buds!! A first spike for me.

Actively Growing:

Blc. Haw Yuan Beauty ‘Spice Girl’ – sending out another new lead, as well as
lots of new roots
C. Summer Spot ‘Carmela’ – is sending up a new growth.
Odcm. Mayfair ‘Golden Gate’ – sending up two new growths
C. Chocolate Drop ‘Volcano Queen’ - also brought back from the Big Island
Sept. 07. It just finished growing a new growth and is currently growing new
roots like mad.
Colmanara Wildcat ‘Carmela’ – growing a new growth & lots of new roots.
Slc. Lakeland – the nearly dead s/h experiment plant, growing 3 new growths
and lots of new roots.
Pot. Hawaiian Prominence ‘Carmela’ – grew 3 new growths over the summer.
Currently has a two new leads and new root growth.
Dtps. Kenneth Schubert ‘Purple Martin’ – growing another new leaf & new
roots. The strange leaf blisters have dried up and not spread any further.
P. Bright Peacock ‘Maple Bridge’ – growing new roots.
P. Flower Child ‘Carmela’ – this plant has a damaged crown & has grown 2 new leaves that are each acting like 2 separate crowns. It looks really weird.
P. SIO’s Night Leopard – this is the other half dead s/h experiment plant
Growing 2 new roots.
Bllra. Marfitch ‘Howard’s Dream’ – has 2 new growths. Scale is looking better.
Sederia japonica – growing 3 new roots
Epi. NOID – small keiki growing a new growth and 2 new roots
Vuyl. Ensan Fantasy– rescued 12/29/07. Growing a new growth. Needs repotting.
Blc. Chia Lin ‘New City’ AM/AOS – Christmas gift. Growing a new lead.

Resting

Den. jenkinsii
Den. fimbriatum oculatum – small keiki given to me by my son this summer
Blc. Mem. Vida Lee ‘Limelight’ – bloomed this summer
Milt. NOID – also a victim of sunburn & dehydration a few years ago. Not loving life right now
L. Santa Barbara Sunset ‘Showtime’ HCC/AOS

I miss her too!

I'm feeling a little frustrated with my Catt alliance plants. They have been sending out lots of new leads but so far they've all been duds. Not a sheath in sight. Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

On the other hand my Paph is going to bloom so I'm on the hunt for more slippers. I'm going to the Willamette Valley Orchid Society show & sale up in Eugene on 2/16. My favorite vendor will be there and she also specializes in slippers. She's already checking her stock to see if she has what's on my wish list.

Terri, I have a Catt alliance 'chid as well that is sending out a lot of new leads as well, but still no sheaths either. I agree it is very frustrating when you feel you have everything to keep it happy!

Lots of stuff happening but I'll wait till next month to do a status report. I am, however, very happy with three of my vandas right now! While moving them back outside...again!...I took a peek between the leaves. I found a few surprises

V. Pat Delight, from which I just removed the last bloom and spike this morning is already growing a new spike!

V. Hilo Rose is starting a new spike!

AND

V Chao Praya Sapphire x Ascda Bangkhuntian Gold, which is in full bloom with two spikes already...is growing another one!!!

Hey guys! Sorry to have been so scarce recently... I'm having a clear out of un-wanted, un-needed, un-used 'stuff' in the attic/garage/house and its been a mess here!! I do see light at the end of the tunnel, though, and I know that its going to feel much better with no so much clutter around.

Terri, you and I must be on the same wavelength!! I've been adding Paphs as well - see below!!

Lots still going on...
Still in flower from before:
Rhynchostele rossii is still going strong, what great long lasting flowers!

The Den Aussie hybrids are every bit as good as I had hoped. One of them has the greatest fragrance (kingianum hybrid) that utterly fills the room during the day! Here are the ones that have bloomed so far:
AussieHybrid#1.jpgAussieHybrid#2.jpgAussieHybrid#3.jpg

Den tetragonum is nearly in full bloom now!!
Den_tetra_fullbloom.jpgDen_tetra_fullbloom_close.jpg

Den aberrans has opened one flower...
Den_aberrans_close.jpg

Den williamsonii has started to form buds!! I can't wait to see this one (it was a new addition that came along with the Aussie Dens...)

Most of the Phals that were in bloom last month are still in flower, but nothing that was in spike last month has started to open any flowers yet.

Masd. tovarensis is still flowering.

That gorgeous white Paph that has been in flower since December still looks pristine!!
Paph_Hybrid_White.jpg

Paph hainanense has a bud maturing and should be open
very soon - watch this space!

Lepanthopsis astrophora 'Stalky' has three super tiny, hair thin spikes, the first of which should have flowers open any day now.

I was very pleasantly surprised to find bud on Trudelia (Vanda) cristata - can't wait for these flowers. The photos of them look so pretty!

New growths on quite a few things. I'm especially happy to see the Phrags putting out new growths They're happy!!

Sophronitis coccinea is maturing two growths - fingers crossed for blooms to come!

And of course, there are the new plants that I've not told you guys about... New to the ever expanding collection of Paphs (blame Jim for this!! Its all because of the photos of his wonderful collection!)

Paph. barbigerum ('Tom Thumb' x 'Select')
Paph. (Armeni White 'Tinto' x S. Gratrix 'Dazzler')
Paph. (S. Gratrix 'Kerry' x delenatii 'Sandy')
Paph. (purpurescens 'Pinkedge' x charlesworthii 'Wubben')
Paph. (purpurescens x venustum var. pardinum)
(I believe purpurescens is now classified as something else, I'm just listing the names as they are on the tags.)
Paph. Iantha Stage
Paph. Lynleigh Koopowitz
Paph. Curtia
Paph. Moustache

All are unflowered seedlings, some are closer to bloom that others. I'm hoping that next year I will see one or two of the them flower. The others will take a bit longer.

That's all for now... Hopefully, I'll be able to get more regular time online in a few weeks! Which reminds me, don't we have a Project coming up? If I'm not around, send me a message - I don't want to miss out on that!

We've missed you! Welcome back

That's a great list you've got there...and I'm still floored by your tetragonum!!!

The next project will get started March 2nd. I'll send you a reminder but folks can also go into our calendar, find the event on March 2nd and request a reminder from OB.

Thanks, Sue!!

Looks like Paphs and Dens are the ones for me - they seem so easy to make happy!

Two things I forgot....

Onc. Twinkle did bloom for me in the end - rather unspectacularly (which is why I forgot all about it)! And for being 'Fragrance Fantasy' it was not all that scented. It certainly couldn't compete with the Aussie Den.

Also, I've dipped my toe in the water with hardy orchids and bought a Cypripedium calceolus to grow in my garden. IOSPE PHOTOS

Wish me luck with it!!

I'll definitely be back for the 2nd of March. Adding it to my calendar now. Thanks again!

These guys need lots of wet soil, at least around here where they grow wild.

Lots going on at your house Shak! I especially love the Aussie Dens! Wow that last one is too cool! Welcome back! We missed you. Want to come to my house next and declutter?

Only 6 more days to the WOS. I will be interested to see what Helene brings to the show. I do know there will be a Phrag. bessea of some kind coming home with me.
