My first was a Noid Cymbidium, in 2005. I was completely ignorant of the culture required for these, and an appartment is not a good place to give the cool down period it needs. It flowered only once.
I got a Phal shortly after (a pink and white multiflora) which did really well for many years. Last year I lost it to mealy bugs and I'm really sad about it. It wasn't anything special, but it was what I considered to be my first true orchid. At the time I didn't make much of an effort to save it since it was 'only' a noid, and now I regret it.

I'd been watching my mother's attempts with orchids ever since I was a kid, finally I decided to get an orchid of my own and see how I fared with it, so I got a nice little Paph
This one was from a nice place called jade orchids
And ever since that one I've gone ahead and added a couple more to the collection
Etc. etc.

They can get huge but I don't currently have a spot where it can grow epiphytically as it would naturally

I was just looking it up to see if it was something to add to my wishlist, and yeah, it looks huge!! I don't really have space for monsters like that.

If I wasn't lucky enough to have the space outdoors, I wouldn't be able to either haha but since getting it, I repotted it and it's sent out seven new pbulbs so I'm excited

I really have no idea when I bought my first orchid. I had thought the first ones were the Vanda and Cattleya someone gave me for house sitting but, then, an acquaintance told me about the Dendrobiums I had given her many years before that and I was reminded that I had picked up some bare-root Dendrobiums canes at a conservatory sale and grown them for a few years until losing interest (Gardenias, jasmines, herbs and the fruiting plants were of more interest to me at the time). I have no idea when that was exactly.

Well my dad had been given two out of bloom phals at work and he decided to give me one. This was three years ago. That phal was my very first orchid. Well it didn't bloom until 2 years later and died shortly afterwards I credit its death to a period where I under watered my orchids and its roots died. Then the first orchid I actually went out and bought for myself was an oncidium that I got at King scoopers on discount 2 years ago. I still have it but O man has it suffered under my care when I first got it lol. It's a trooper and I hope it blooms later this year.
