After her first orchid (a Phal) rotted while in my care, I owed her a new one (but not a big one, because she didn't have any space in her dorm room). I had wanted to take her shopping for one at some point, but never really got a chance, and then one day my mom went to Lowe's and grabbed a bunch of clearance plants. I repotted the mini Phal into sphagnum and a net pot, as I thought that might work better for my sister's particular watering habits.
Several months later, her plants are with me once again, while she spends a month in Spain. Here's the Phal
Look at those new roots escaping the net pot.
There's also another root on the other side that's actually stuck itself to the side of the decorative pot, lol
Also I had put some rocks at the bottom of the decorative pot in order to give the net pot some height so it could be more easily lifted out (as the intention was for my sister to remove the net pot from the decorative one for watering), but I guess the rocks also have the effect of preventing the net pot from sitting in water if she wasn't taking the net pot out? That would explain how the root had time to attach itself.
