No need to be surprised, there are commercially cultivated varieties that tend to be less bitter than thetypical wild type. They're very popular in areas with a large number of people of Italian descent.

I have a large planter of dandelions for eating. They don't spread if you pinch off the flowers. They sell varieties that have larger leaves and set seed less.
Stores in my area get them in spring and early summer. So if you're interested try looking around then.
