Orchid Nicknames- Here are mine. How do you nickname yours? Female
Default Orchid Nicknames- Here are mine. How do you nickname yours?

Hey everyone!!

I thought I would do a little show and tell of my new orchids I've picked up and share their nicknames with you. Who wants to call an orchid "Burrageara Nelly Isler" when you can just call it "Leela"?

Anyway, here are many of my orchids and what I've named them!! (I can't really take credit for these blooms because these are new for the most part)

First we have Oncidium Heaven Scent "Redolence"
Nickname: "Esther" Why? My mom's name is Esther and she got this for me one day when I was feeling sad.

Next we have a NOID phalanenopsis from Trader Joe's.
Nickname: "Tweety Bird" Why? Well isn't it just obvious? The canary yellow! The petals shaped uncannily like Tweety Bird's head! I don't know if I want to change that ... do you guys have any better suggestions?

Here is my dendrobium kingianum.
Nickname: "Jadzia Dax" Why? I am a big ol Star Trek nerd, and I thought the purple blooms and hardiness of the plant matched up with Jadzia so well! I mean, she married a Klingon for goodness sake!

Here is my paphiopedilum supersuk 'eureka' x raisin pie 'hsinying' x sib.
Nickname: "Luisa" This was named after my longtime and cherished friend Luisa. She is badass, and this flower is so cool that when she asked me to nickname an orchid after her, I had to pick this guy!

This is my NOID Den. nobile. It smells like mothballs to me, unfortunately. Luckily that smell isn't too strong.
Nickname: "Nicki Minaj" Because Nicki is a high-color, thick, amazing lady, and these flowers match her lipstick and her flamboyant wigs. Also because how can you say no to Nicki?

NOID pink miltoniopsis. This is by far my favorite orchid I've had!! It smells amazing like roses, and it's just gorgeous. I wish it had an ID because I would buy 10.
Nickname: "Crybaby" Do you not see the face of a shrieking little kid in this orchid's patterns? It looks so angry! I love its attitude!

Not pictured:
A mini NOID phal rescue that I have never seen in bloom. I nicknamed it Frodo, because it is the tiniest orchid in my collection.

A rescue psychopsis I got. I have always wanted a psychopsis because they are sequentially blooming for a very long time, and they remind me of an infamous video game character from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Yep, I got this guy and nicknamed it "Kaepora Gaebora" because if you know that owl, you'll now how much he looks like a psychopsis!

My second rescue psychopsis has been nicknamed "Gwaihir" - keeping in the themes of nerdiness and famous birds. Gwaihir is the king of the eagles in Tolkien's world.

I also have a NOID brassia that is out of bloom, and I nicknamed it "Staryu." For any of you pokémon fans, you'll know that name instantly!

Well, now that I've shared, how about you share!! Show me pictures of your nicknamed orchids! Or... am I the only one on OB who makes up funny names to call her plants?

Thanks guys, and have a good one!

That is really creative!
The only time I have ever done this was when I had a plant that I could not positively identify. I named it 'Charlie'. I think it may have been a Stephanotis (I think that is the right spelling) but no one in the area could identify it and it never bloomed. It was in the pot when I bought my variegated Musa, a little, nearly dead thing with half a green leaf. I had it many, many years but finally decided that, as it never bloomed, it wasn't worth the space.

Astrid I knew this was your post just by reading the title :P

I don't normally nickname my plants for my benefit, but they do get easy-to-understand names for when I talk about them to 'everyone else'.

My Bulbophyllum medusae gets called 'the mophead' and my C. rex seedlings are 'the babies'. Otherwise I go with names like 'the pink slipper' or 'the big white one'.

Recently I have found myself coming out with 'another damned virused orchid' but that's another story.

Luisa has been nominated for March Photo of the Month.

Ooooooh a nomination really?
Wow thanks if the nomination was your doing!! <3 I really appreciate that!

Sorry you've got viruses to deal with. I have a miltoniopsis that is slowly dying before my eyes. I divided it after getting it, and half of it turned orange at the bulb bases and started rotting away and falling apart. I thought the other division was safe but it appears not! How frustrating to see them slowly dying! grr!

I prefer to call them what they are named, but occasionally, I've run across a "@#&%!*{$ plant" that wont bloom!

It never really occurred to give my plants nicknames. I'm like Ray and usually call them by their real names, unless they give me a reason to call them otherwise.... Calling them by their real names is also a good way to remember the real names without checking the labels all the time!

Only my noids have been given names, but those are more like adoptive names than nicknames. I'm not very creative and they're called 'big yellow' , 'speckled yellow', 'the moody one' 'smelly catt'. And even those are not really set in stone.

I have one that has a name, Shirley. It's a rescue phal, its previous owner gave her to me to resuscitate. Hopefully Shirley pulls through

If it doesn't come when you call it, why give it a name?

Well, much like ents, they can come when you call them but they're very slow.

I never give them nicknames but i do give them clonal names if i know the plant is original and seed grown.
I mostly name them after friends and certain characteristics of the blooms.

I do like your nickname "Nicki Minaj" for that Dendrobium. Maybe i'll give a name like that to one of my Phrag kovachiis
