It was -14 degrees last night and for the first time, my heater quit in the greenhouse. Everything is limp. I am heartbroken. The economy has hit us hard and I will not be able to afford to replace my plants. This may be the end of the orchid era for me.

It is scary the amount of times I have seen this happen. People growing orchids in warm climates don't know how good they have it sometimes. I can't imagine the loss you are feeling right now.

Is it your whole entire collection that suffered or a portion? Orchids are amazingly resilient so I wouldn't give up on them immediately. I'm one of those that keep orchids with no roots and shriveled bulbs just on the off chance they decide to come back.

It looks worse out there right now than it did a couple of hours ago. Everything feels mushy even if it is still standing upright. Had over 100 orchids and 50 some other plants out there and I am pretty sure they are gone. I plan to give them a few days, to see if any show a spark of life.

Daethen,

I will send you a few plants when it warms up, if you are interested.

I'm so sorry this happened. It is my worse fear. Do you know how cold it got in there? Hopefully some will pull thru. If there wasn't a border between us I would send you some divisions.

I'm so sorry! I, too, have some orchids for you, if/when you are ready. I've got too darn many plants to haul to the sink, and it's making me crazy.
