I LOVE this time of year

First off i know this thread is useless without pictures, i'll get onto that tomorrow.

But anyway, i love this time of year for orchids down under. This is peak growing season, where anything and everything is shooting out new canes... It's so exciting watching them grow, almost better than watching flower spikes growing.

I have a basket full of Coelogyne 'Unchained Melody' that must have literally 30 new growths forming. I also have a Den kingianum that has 5 new growths from the base and 8 (EIGHT!) new growths from the LEAF AXILS! I think if i leave these 'kiekis' to grow i'll end up with a plant the size of a skyscraper. Even my Den Elegant Lace 'Vibrant' and my Stanhopea decided to get into gear and have tiny little nodes shooting forth.

Three cheers for the Summer and here's hoping the possums and caterpillars don't figure out what's happening!

I don't know if oyu saw my post in the other thread but...Brian from DUNO is bringing a Den Elegant Lace 'Vibrant' to the Santa Barbara show in February for me! I have to wait till early March for it but at least I know I'm getting one!!!

Wicked! I'm glad it worked out! I happened to take a pic of my baby Elegant Lace 'Vibrant' so i'll post it too.

BTW this is a very self-absorbed post i know but i just get so excited seeing new growth and none of my friends really share that enthusiasm so i just have to tell somebody.

Hi Undergrounder,
This is the first spring for me as an orchid grower! I must agree with you! All my 'chids are happily growing too, I am enjoying this lovely mild weather before summer (we've had a few hot days already!).
Christmas is always a scorcher here- usually the high 30's to the low 40's.

That’s one of the main reasons why I like too come to this forum a place to share your Happy Moments. Family and friends don’t always understand the excitement or appreciate the involvement a person puts into making that plant grow…so be self absorbed all you like….

But that's what we're here for!! And I love hearing when other people's orchids are growing well. Its sometimes just the inspiration that I need. By all all means, keep the joy (and photos!) coming!

PS. That Coelogyne is awesome!! That thing must weigh a ton!

Thanks for the support heh.. happiness is seeing that little spike a centimetre higher than it was yesterday!

Unfortunately i can't take credit for the Coelogyne but it is a beauty. I bought it pretty much at the size that it is. I cut off about 1/3 and potted those up singly in pots to re-sell but i still have quite a big specimen, especially with all the new growths.

Hi All, I too enjoy this OB because I don't have anyone around me that truly understands the thrill of orchid growing. They look at the plants and think "that's nice" but they really don't understand the emotional aspect of growing and watching them produce for us. It's something that you can't explain and if you try to, you get these looks of "wow, she is a crazy woman!"
So please please continue to share your successes.....and failures.... so that we may all enjoy along with you....or share your pain. Everyone learns here at OB. I can not tell you all how much I appreciate each and every one of you! kiki-do
