Sharry: I use repot me Oncidium and seedling classic orchid mix. I have it in a net pot nested in a ceramic pot in my house. I soak it for about 20 mins once a week in water with fert. and supplements. I also try to keep water in the bottom of the pot to add to the humidity but it try not let the mix sit in it.

I've been somewhat good....
Since my last post, I've ONLY purchased:
1) Mo. Painted Desert x Catasetum Orchidglade 2) Encyclia maderoi 3) Encyclia hamiltonii 4) Encyclia steinbachii :) This is the year of the Encyclia and Catasetum for me. I've wanted to try them for a while and I think that these two will largely be the focus of my purchases this year. Of course, whenever an exceptionally lovely plant crosses my mind, I'm not going to say no! |

It never fails, the only way I will leave my orchid society's meeting WITHOUT buying an orchid is to not attend at all! I even left my checkbook at home. But noooooooo! Our guest speaker accepts PayPal. So I ended up with four new plants NOT Neofinetia. He had a lot of Paphiopedelium and Phragmipedium--which is my society's favorite plant, fortunately I cannot grow these plants satisfactorily, so I passed on those. But those lady slippers were lovely, he had a couple of beautiful Phragmipedium bessea that were just starting to bloom for $25.00. 1 Dendrobium Micro chip--beautiful yellow white flowers and fragrant too. I bought this one too last year and it spiked in August and has been putting out new spikes and flowers ever since and has not stopped blooming. The scent is great! |

Hello LovePhals, Dendrobium Microchip has been on my wish list for some time. But I haven't ventured into growing Dendrobium because of their confusing culture. When our guest speaker pulled this plant and another one from his packing cases, I was standing nearby and caught a wiff of its scent. When he provided its identity, I was the first one to reach for it and claim it for myself. I was reaching for the other plant but my society's Vice President got to it first and she growled "hands off this one is mine!" We both had to laugh at our behavior, as we did not even care if any other members wanted to look at these two plants. Our guest speaker/Dendrobium vendor stated, I would have brought more of these plants but I was told your society was more interested in Phaphs and Phrags! My hard won Dendrobium Microchip is in my home office and it fills the room with its lovely clean scent. |
That is a funny story! I am glad you took it home and got to try a dendrobium! I have gotten more into Den's lately and those have consumed my recent purchases. For me, they prove easy to care for.
I bought my Micro Chip from Oak Hill and it had been on my wish list for a long time as well. It was a must have for me after I saw it on the forums. I am glad I added it, it doesn't take up much space and is beautiful. |
