Ok, admit it.....what have you bought lately 2014 edition!!
This weekend the Michiana Orchid Show (South Bend, Indiana) is in full flower. Show starts tomorrow but I went today to set up my society's orchid display.
And of course, I couldn't stay away from the sale room. Hilltop Orchids (Illinois), Nate's Orchids (Illinois), Porters Orchids (Michigan), Little Frog Farm (Michigan), and New Vision Orchids (Indiana) were all selling their lovely plants.
From Nates Orchids I purchased
Darwinara Charm 'Blue Stars'--very purple blue
Neostylis 'Lou Sneary' Bluebird
Vuyl. Melissa Brianne 'Dark'
Milt Andrea West
Mtssa. Massai Red
Burr Nelly Isher
From Littlefrog Farm:
Masdevallia schroederiana
Stellis cilotata
Masdevallia floribunda
There were several plants I wanted to buy but I restrained myself.

Brassavola nodosa
Zygopetalum Redvale "Pretty Ann"
Encyclia cordigera (white)
and even though it's not an orchid, some unknown Pinguicula species

Recent Purchases
I recently order two mounted orchids (a first for me) from Ian's orchids in Hawaii. Dockrillia rigida, which looks to be producing flower spikes, and Dendrobium speciosum var pedunculatum.

MC, the dendrobium speciosum will grow fairly large. Is it mounted on cork, tree fern, wood slab, tree branch, or otherwise? I much prefer to grow orchids mounted, though I do grow in a greenhouse where watering is not much of a problem. Watering will be your biggest concern, but the den is more or less forgiving of a learning curve.

It's var pedunculatum, the dwarf subspecies. Mature pseudobulbs supposedly range anywhere from the size of a thumb, to the size of a cucumber. Hopefully mine stays more towards the thumbs size. It's mounted on a cedar plank about 6x10 inches. My mount orchids are sprayed everyone 1-2 days. I don't have a greenhouse to grow in, all my plants are in an east-facing windowsill. Most of them seem pretty happy with the arrangement.

Been interested in vandas lately, the good thing is Indonesia is the home of many Vanda species!

I'm deciding if I want to make one more order before it gets to cold to order plants, or if I just want to wait until spring and see how my plants do through the winter. I really want another cattleya or two. Brassovola nodosa seems to love my growing room, the leaves on mine are spotted with purple and growing like crazy. I would love to have more oncidiums, but I already have three downstairs that haven't moved upstairs out of quarantine yet...
Oh the dilemma!

Ended up picking up Zygonisia Cynosure 'Blue birds' today. TJs. 13$ for a 6" plant, growing nicely with new pbulbs. Really can't beat their prices and we had our first snow last night, so I believe I am done ordering orchids for the year. Dangit.
I had three tolumnia I wanted to get from Hausermann's too!
