Yesterday, I bought the next orchids:
- Paphiopedilum gratrixianum (in spike)
- Epidendrum ibaguense
- Oncidium flexuosum
- Ludisia discolor 'Dawsoniana'
- Vanda-type orchid (unknown, I think an Angraecum germinyanum)
And last but not least a Laelia purpurata (the grower isn't sure)

Tips for growing these orchids are always welcome!

Gerben

Gerben, do,you grow under lights, on window sill, sunroom, greenhouse? The Epi grows quite tall so lots of head room is required. The Ludisia will grow nicely in a fairly shaded situation, but not heavy shade. I, just this week, received an Angraecum germinyianum and today put it into a net basket with wine corks and a small amount of New Zealand sphagnum, situation similar to Angraecum modesta which grows like crazy in a 10 cm terra cotta saucer with only some small pebbles for covering the original roots.

On the other hand, it takes a long time to grow a young plant to bloom size.
Another good point Matt! However, growing from small plants is frequently a better way for the very reason that you give. I buy mature plants when I feel confident about their future, but sometimes still lose them. This brings up a problem about plant loss. I have discovered that there are times that I must accept a loss (monetary) when a costly plant dies, and they will from time to time. But, how does one upgrade their collection?

Well, technically I didn't buy these since they were freebies after spending a day repotting part of Ball State's orchid collection, but....

Here's "the list:"

Cymbidium madidum
Dendrobium amethystoglossum
D. anosmum semi-alba
D. kingianum alba
D. Stephen Batchelor (alexandriae x johnsonae)
D. Spring Bride (Ise 'Yahoi' x Mild Yumi)
D. Nagasaki 'S&W' x Wave King 'Butterfly'
D. unknown keiki
Laelia Santa Barbara Sunset 'Showtime'
Oncidium altissimum
Onc. sphacelatum
Onc. Belle Glade 'Everglade Waterfall'

Of course, I was out of room BEFORE I brought these home, and the Onc. species get pretty big....But I couldn't bear to see perfectly healthy divisions go into the trash....

Wow, Suri, that quite a list! Heavy on vandals and relatives and phals, but a worthwhile list. I'm very afraid to list all of mine for the year.

This weekend the Michiana Orchid Show (South Bend, Indiana) is in full flower. Show starts tomorrow but I went today to set up my society's orchid display.

And of course, I couldn't stay away from the sale room. Hilltop Orchids (Illinois), Nate's Orchids (Illinois), Porters Orchids (Michigan), Little Frog Farm (Michigan), and New Vision Orchids (Indiana) were all selling their lovely plants.

From Nates Orchids I purchased
Darwinara Charm 'Blue Stars'--very purple blue
Neostylis 'Lou Sneary' Bluebird
Vuyl. Melissa Brianne 'Dark'
Milt Andrea West
Mtssa. Massai Red
Burr Nelly Isher

From Littlefrog Farm:
Masdevallia schroederiana
Stellis cilotata
Masdevallia floribunda

There were several plants I wanted to buy but I restrained myself.
