My orchid society had a very entertaining guest speaker. He brought several plants for sale--Cattleya, Dendrobium, Oncidium, Angraecum, Encyclia, even Neofinetia falcata.
I was not interested in getting plants BUT...I couldn't resist, I bought three more plants:
1. Phal. Hieroglyphics x sib
2. Den. canaliculatum x sib
3. Trichophillia sauvis
There over 26 members present and I think we all left with at least three plants.

Ok, admit it.....what have you bought lately 2014 edition!!
I am bummed. Got my masdevallia erinacea six days ago. This morning, all of the leaves fell off. I've contacted the vendor to request refund or replacement, but I suspect I'll get a refund as they didn't have many of these to start with. Maybe I'm just not meant to grow masdevallias.
Update: Just heard back from the vendor. The plants are recently imported and they are going to ship another one out to me in a week or so when they are sure that they are stable. Love it when vendors are happy to make things right!

I have a fairly newly purchased masdevallia erinacea, from last February. It has bloomed very nicely and has several seed pods. It received a CCM at judging recently. The big caveat here is: I have it growing in a terrarium in a periodic stream of ultrafog. I didn't even try to grow it in my g/h. Look at the moderate sized terrariums at, say, Petsmart. They are not too big for a limited space. If you have any questions feel free to ask. It is possible that your plant was growing in high humidity and the shock of moving to lower humidity stressed it too much. Maybe I'll send a few photos of my setup along with a photo of my M. Erinacea.

I bought it for my terrarium. I have the mini tall exo-Terra. I don't have a fogger, too small a terrarium for a fogger setup, but I do hand mist every morning and water as needed.
I placed the plant in my terrarium after it arrived. Humidity is 82% in there. Please do pm me! I would love to be successful with this species!

I bought an ultrafogger humidifier from Walmart and put a tube through the top screen. It is hooked up to a good interval timer and with the length of fogging, intervals of fogging, and off at night, a fill lasts about four days. Photos follow tonight (MD)

I went a little crazy when I discovered I like paphiopedilums. I first bought Paph. Van Ness 'Lillian'x Gege Hughes 'HarvestnMoon' then found a bulldog noID at TJ's. I couldn't stop there so I bought three Maudie types, a Roth cross and lastly a Toni Semple. I hope I can keep them alive. Now I'm stressing.

Sounds sort of dumb, but I discovered by trial and talking to long term growers, that the best way to learn orchid growing is to kill some. As long as you don't repeat your mistakes, each "death" is a learning experience. Beside, when you begin to buy more costly plants, there is a great deal of incentive to keep them alive.

Excellent point Bulbonut. You can also hedge your success vs. failure experience by acquiring seedlings or younger plants that would grow up in your environment. Young plants can acclimate easier than older plants. Plus these younger plants are not as expensive.
On the other hand, it takes a long time to grow a young plant to bloom size.
