A free option for anyone who wants to 'roll their own' is the database (Base) capability included in Apache OpenOffice. I haven't tried it yet myself, but just putting that out there. A plus is that it's available for MacOS as well as windows and linux.

Uggh on Bento being discontinued. I use it for some work projects as well. I do have Filemaker as well but hadn't hoped to have to convert things to it. Thanks for the information. I hadn't gotten a notice.

I went looking for orchid tracking apps on the App Store, but there's really not anything there that suits my needs. So I've decided to roll my own!
I've already developed similar apps for bonsai and cacti collections, and people keep emailing me about working on an app for orchids, so it sounds like someone other than me would find it useful?
It'll be a universal app, meaning it'll work on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. I'm aiming for a Spring 2014 release date for the new app (Orchid Album). If you're curious about the general look and feel of the app, it'll be similar to Bonsai Album. I talk a bit more about the app and what led to its development on my site.
btw are there any good options for Mac users? Most of the orchid software I've read about online seems to be PC only.

Use LibreOffice instead it' where the work is done and issues corrected.
I've envisionned to use it as well, but I'm definitely bad at SGDB design…

Why do you need a tracking system?
My orchids just stay where I put 'em, so I don't have to track 'em down, ever!

Development on Orchid Album is progressing well, so I thought I'd post a few early screenshots from the app.
It won't have the ability to track roving hordes of orchids via GPS, but it sounds like that's not a concern for most people (Hi, Ray!)

Sure. I'm keeping track of this, just haven't been able to really get working on it yet. But should in the next week or two.

iOS and Mac OS X are almost the same, but almost doesn't cut it in computer languages. My program will come out for iOS first followed by Mac OS X; however, you may be able to run iOS apps by installing the free Xcode development environment from Apple onto your Mac.

I keep a simple spreadsheet for mine with the following columns:
Orchid #
Orchid Genus
Orchid Name
Flower Color
Last Water
Potted Date
Pot Type
Media
Leaf Count
Keiki Pro Date
Keiki
# Of Flower Spikes
Last Bloom Cycle
Number of Blooms
Plant Health R/Y/G
New Leaf
New Leaf Date
Purchased Date
Purchased Location
Dead
Notes
Explanations... I label each pot with a number and the Health R/Y/G is Red is in poor health and green is good. I also put a colored plant tag in each pot to correspond with the health status.
