Polarize, you can do some very basic research on the RHS orchid database. It's annoying to use but can work if you don't have access to OW. I agree that it is quite an expense for those just entering the world of breeding.

Thank you Orchidsarefun and zxyqu. I am very interested in learning more about breeding and trying my hand at it as well. I'd love to propagate species plants. I have some uncommon plants that I want to work with. Hybridizing could be fun too.

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction. I suppose eventually I'll have to purchase a copy of Orchidwiz.

Go for it regardless of what you decide. Once pollinated you'll have plenty of time to find someone to sow the pod for you or maybe even learn how to yourself. It's a fun, and long adventure (3-7 years depending on the cross). Get started young and often!

I'd like to pop in here and say this is a pretty large overstatement. If anything, maybe about 15 - 20% of currently made and newly registered hybrids are 3n (probabily much less considering the massive Asian firms that do numerous tetraploid crosses, which could drive that closer to 5 or 10%). The great thing about them is since they are almost virtually sterile, if they are accidentally made by a breeder, they end there, and more fertile routes are taken.

Vee, only the pod parent will pass along mitochondrial DNA. This is regardless of its ploidy status
