So I was at this store earlier, Meijer, a huge Wal Mart-like store with an actual plant section. They had all these big, overpriced blooming Phals filling up their shelf, and several feet behind them were two lone Phals, one of which had lost all its flowers and had several dead-looking roots (but also some healthy roots). Also it had no price tag.

I tried to see if I could get a big discount on that one, since obviously nobody was going to buy it at full price and they were probably going to get rid of it anyway. But no, turns out they have some kind of deal with the supplier, and they have to either sell it at full price or send it back.

Oh well, Lowe's has clearance racks, and earlier this year an employee marked a cactus down to 50 cents for me because I found it randomly on the ground without a pot anywhere to be seen. So it's only a matter of time before I find a dirt-cheap, healthy-but-just-not-blooming orchid there. I do actually want a couple mini Phals anyway to flank my big Phal. (Also the one I tried to rescue was another big one, so uhh, I'm not totally sure where I would've put it, unless I could cram it in next to my current one)

I hope if the nursery takes them back they then grow them on to flower again and put it back out for sale, rather than just throwing them away

My local garden centre puts them on a discount rack. I'm sometimes wary because the longer they have been in the garden centre the more abuse they will have received. However I've got some really good ones that way in the past. Sometimes all that is wrong with them is that they've stopped blooming

Yeah, seems a lot of places don't discount out of bloom or in bad condition plants as they can return them to the supplier. But, doesn't hurt to ask!

True!
However, at this time of the year, I doubt we will see any discounts. I'm counting on after Christmas/New Year clearance season.
Local Safeway has the same policy - no discounts, send half dead plants back or worse, compost them.
