My mom and I were in Home depot about 11 years ago and they were having a sale on bloomed out orchids. So we bought some and got hooked.

My mum bought me an orchid (Phal) for my birthday in 2006, after it finished flowering I kept it fully expecting it would never flower again assuming you needed special conditions to get them to flower but I liked green plants anyway an never throw away healthy plants.
I was so surprised when I got a flower spike on it in 2007 that I decided to get some fertiliser for it and pay it more attention. I didn't know anything about it, I was not even sure it WAS an orchid because the name Phalaenopsis on the tag made me think it was something else, I knew so little about orchids I didn't know Phalaenopsis was a type of orchid.
The fertiliser I bought was a powder which turned out to need mixing a tiny amount in more water than I needed for one Phal. So the solution... buy more phals
I got two more phals and arround the same time decided to repot the first one, I almost killed it with bad bark mix and came here looking for help... that's when I got hooked, seeing all the wonderful photos and seeing how many different genera of orchids there were. My collection has grown since then, not massively fast, but I now have over 100 and they are everywhere in the house

I got hooked on plants back when I was raising lizards as a teenager. I liked the natural look that plants provided in the enclosures and lizards loved them, too. Before long, I discovered how cool bromeliads are, not to mention they were cool additions to a terrarium and some provided cups of water for the animals to drink from.
Eventually, my great aunt noticed that I was as interested in the plants as I was in the animals. She bought me a dendrobium for my birthday. It was beautiful and I was immediately addicted. Unfortunately the dendrobium didn't survive. Even to this day, I struggle with dends, and even to some degree phals. But fortunately, slippers and oncidiums love me, and those also happen to be my favorites.

A friend gave me a purple phal way back in '93/94. Had no idea what I was doing (no orchid board then and of course it died. So I bought another not long after and that too died. A" Fry End" (she was no friend) told me in a very condescending voice that " One needed a green house to grow them in and that any orchids I bought would NEVER survive in an apartment."
I sorta gave up. Soooo, got serious again about 8 years ago with a "I'll show her " attitude. By now we had bought a town home and I had a bit more room, 2 good sized bay windows and more natural light. Today, thanks to orchid board, joining a local orchid society, and learning what grows well for me, I'm up to over 100 plants (you know there's more, I just stopped counting) . I've been able to bloom Paphs, phrags, angraecums, vandas to name a few. Our orchid show is next weekend so here I come. Love my hobby

I have OWNED orchids for about 10 years, but I have only GROWN them for two. It's a big difference.
I had bunch of sad looking Phals, that had managed to survive a year or two of mistreatment, when I decided to actually try and grow them properly. So I started to search for info on the web, stumbled across a bunch of orchid forums, and the collection was a fact.
I've learned so much, and I'm still learning so much, especially about my favourite genera, and it feels like I'll never know enough.
