I interviewed Ray for an ethnography I wrote on orchid growers this past semester and I'm pretty sure he told me he had more than 200 in his greenhouse...*goes to look* I don't have the exact number he gave me in the paper, but the other three primary interview sources (from this message board) had more than 100 (130 and 150, respectively, for those that did give me real numbers) each. I have a measly 9 and my fiance thinks that's too many...*huff*

No offense meant to anyone.
In the future, please consider starting threads like this in the "Lounge" area. Beginner questions end up buried without much exposure.
Thank you.

Thank you Hun. I didn't realise that was an option.
Are you a Moderator? Can you flip us all over to the right place?
I'll try to behave better.

Moved to Orchid Lounge
I know I used to chat with a member who had hundreds of Cyms alone ...

I have about 77 types in my collection at the moment.
There are definitely people lurking around with hundreds of plants - I vaguely recall seeing pictures of cyann's big growing area which was wall-to-wall pleurothallids (which are quite small, so loads of them).

I remember Sue, who used to be around here a lot, told how she was amazed when someone told her they had over a hundred when she was just starting out, and she thought she would never get that many... but at the time of her post she had 200 I think she has a lot less now due to health but she still has a lot.
Me... I've been stuck around the 90 mark for a few years now.

Most everyone I interviewed told me they had killed more than they own, which I understand to kind of be the best way to learn...to kill them, haha! A lot of them also said they had had instances where a lot of the plants died (Ray lost almost all of his overnight one time when his greenhouse heater died in the middle of winter), and they had built their collections all the way back up. That's some serious dedication. I only wish we had a house so I could hang them off my hypothetical porch and deck and trees. Then I'd have a lot more than I do at present *maniacal laugh*

You know in my honest opinion, I have never killed an Orchid.
I supply them with food and water, Love and Care.
I have had a few commit suicide, but I have never killed one. That wouldn't be nice!!!

Phalaenopsis hate me. I have killed more than a few. I have also tried to rescue them unsuccessfully and given up and thrown them out. I have burned a few phals, let them get to dry and lose their roots...ironically, I have, as of yet, never overwatered one.
