Unhappy Just a little homesick

Good-morning to you all on this nice coolish Florida morning. One thing I sure miss living here is autumn and the mountains... I'm from Colorado a little tiny town in the south west corner. Half of it is on the Southern Ute Indian reservation. I dont know how many of you Colorado people are familiar with the Durango area? I'm from the little town of Ignacio, last time I was home we still didnt have one traffic light. I sure miss that small town feeling...

Good morning Joann

I agree...it does take a bit of getting used to...but I've adjusted now Whenever I start feeling a little homesick (NY), I just think about how I won't be shovelling any snow over the winter and I feel all better!

Good Morning, Joann,

Yes, home in the mountains is wonderful & beautiful with the changing seasons but you lucky, lucky, Floridians can grow orchids outside, all year!

And you have those awesome bat plants at your Home Depot!

I love the changing seasons. Shoveling a bit of snow is worth it all when you see the display of fall colors, like now.

In the area I live I’ve met a few New Yorker’s who say the same thing as you Susanne. They all say they don’t miss the snow either. I’m a person who really needs to see the seasons change. I don’t mean to rag on Florida but here the only weather is hot, hotter and extreme humidity. I found it rather a novelty when I first got here to see flowers blooming in December outdoors.

I miss the smell of cedar and pinion burning in a woodstove heater. The way you can see the whole sky and you don’t have to go to the 7th floor of a building to see it. I miss the Colorado nature, deer all over the place. The feel of a a crisp morning and you can see your own breath. Walking down town and everybody calls you bye name and asks how you are? (Sad to say this was one of my pet peeves living in a small town that unfortunately everybody knew everybody’s business.) But now I miss it.

Yes Gwen it is nice to be able to grow plants outside all year around and because of it I’m able to experiment with a much broader range of plants which I could never do because of the winter in Colorado. As far as the Bat plant which I would really like to have to, I think they only sell those in the home depot’s that are more southern Florida. I have yet to see one here in my area. I’m in central Florida.

Grandma M I’m with you all the way, I love the changing seasons. There is nothing like a cold winter to make you appreciate the spring. At least you feel a sense of change. You walk outside and you see the trees turning colors, then the trees lose there leaves. Then it’s the first snow fall. I love waking up and seeing everything covered in snow it’s a wonderful frozen wonderland. The feeling of waking up and seeing snow on Christmas Day. I could go on and on….

I can see why you are homesick, I go to the silverton/Ouray area every summer to go camping. It is the most beautiful place. I always look forward to going back, and geting out of Texas for a while.

Aww Jo you do seem pretty down, I wish I could say something that would make you feel better.

Maybe its what Sue said -- ajustment time> How long have you been there? have you made friends? So very important - nothing like a good friend to keep you up in spirits

I have been wanting to move somewhere for the couple of years now, to simply get away from the coldness and snow. And spend my time walking around in that sunshine with warmer beautiful weather.

I don't mind some winter time and I too LOVE the season in change and would miss it if I moved to a warmer place.
But all in all, I feel I would trade it in. I wouldn't miss the -45 and all those freaky ice storms. Here, our summers are just to short, only a couple of months.

I hope you feel better about things soon

I must be too old to think back wistfully on the days when I lived in the snow zone. It was pretty harsh, got down to -38 one winter. All the pipes froze. Summers weren't any better 100+ for 3 months out of the year. The wind blew 24/7/365. We really only had two seasons, winter and summer. I was so glad to move! I love sub-tropical weather. I'd move to Hawaii in a heartbeat if I could afford it.....and my husband came with me. As it is now about all he can take is 2 weeks and he's got island fever. LOL Guess I'll just have to wait him out.
