Talking Just had to buy some orchids today

It's payday and last weekend I cleaned and disinfected the GH, threw out some chids that just never decided to get past the look of death stage, and re-potted those that needed it. So guess what? Time to fill in some of the new space with new orchids.

I couldn't help myself. I purchased 3 Catasetinae from SVO. I also sent out several emails about flask inquiries for this year.

This addiction is going to do a number on my pocketbook.

It is always a terrible thing to waste growing space.

The orchids arrived today and Fred sent me a free goody!

Here is what I bought:

Cycd. Chiriqui

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

This is the re-make of a very successful hybrid using improved parental stock. The Mormodes will be dominant for its dark red color and the Cycnoches will be dominant for its large, flat flower form. These are going to be large, bronze to red flowers with contrasting dark red lips of excellent shape. Excellent award potential with this grex.

Clo. Pierre Couret

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Here we are breeding for long lived dark pink to rose colored Clowesetum flowers. The Ctsm. pileatum v. imperale has amazing dark red color. The Cl. Rebecca Northen (Cl. Grace Dunn x Cl. rosea) will assure multiple spiking habit, frilled lips and improved flower life. I do expect colors to range from soft yellow to dark rose with the most desirable being the dark rose ones!

Cyc. cooperi

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Here is the best of the best. Cyc. cooperi ‘SVOIII’ FCC/AOS is the best cooperi ever seen; here we have crossed it to the dark flowered ‘Mem. Pat Worthington’ AM/AOS with its extra wide petals of the darkest chocolate color. Expect the dark chocolate color to dominate with improved shape and size, these are the next level in high quality Cyc. cooperi.

And the free goody:

Morm. Virgen del Valle ‘Dark Horse’ x Cyc. warscewiczii ‘SVO Widest Petals’

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Sunset Valley Orchids - Grower and hybridizer of quality orchids, Vista CA

Cycnodes (Cycd.) hybrids are the combination of a Cycnoches and a Mormodes. This hybrid will get the best qualities of both parents, the Mormodes (Morm. sinuata x Morm. hookeri) is dominant for its burgundy color and the Cycnoches warscewiczii is dominant for size and flat form. Cycnodes hybrids are a proven winning combination and this will be no exception. These will have large, flat, red to bronze flowers with contrasting red lips. Very showy flowers

Now the waiting game starts. No watering until the roots are over an inch long.

I have two cyncnodes I bought last autumn which I really have no idea how to grow, even after reading everything. I have them in moss/basket pots and they are growing after being dormant but I worry that they aren't getting enough light, fertilizer, etc. First time grower. I have read quite a bit but, you know, until I see the blooms (or not) I won't know if I am doing it right. They started sprouting in February!

I really love what you bought! They should look amazing when in bloom!

geez.......wow......and since I know that you also have bought a lot of flasks recently, I think an intervention is required
I would be the same if I had the space.....in fact thinking about it, maybe I am worse because I don't have the space !

It helps when you get rid of the old chids that have been hanging around and not thriving for years. I have been hanging on to some older stuff that I was trying to "save" and I just got tired of trying to make them do anything. They weren't in good enough shape to even pass along to a new home so in the trash can they went. Sometimes you just have to let go.

Great picks, and a great call. Here's hoping some of the new ones thrive better than those that didn't.
