'Popping' buds to make them open?

I have never done it to any of my orchids but I do remember doing it to other flowers as a child. Anyone want to suggest whether they think it does make them open quicker? I'll admit to 'popping' one today in the vain hope that it might open in time for my orchid meeting this week LOL

No idea if it actually speeds anything up, but I do it sometimes, especially on phals.
