A few new orchids - Orchid Board

There were many beautiful orchids on display and some were as expensive as $4,000!!! I think it was phrag kovachii although I'm not sure exactly what it was as it was sitting on top of a tall display table.

My main goal was to pick up some paphs from orchid zone and I did pick up two vinis and one white complex (looks the same as one of mine but a lot bigger flower).
These were quite expensive and I have to say they looked better in that dark room with lighting than they do in natural light and I got a little too excited. and one of them had these fungal spotts all over on two of the leaves which I cut off at home. didn't spot that as plants were all wrapped up in plastic and stuff. funny thing is this slightly diseased one has two new small fans with it. The other two are single growth. hopefully it is going to be fine and those spots do not come back. just finished potting them up in cocopeat for experiment.

Then I picked up yamamoto dendrobium Country Gril, one of the nobile hybrids I've been wanting to have, and finally yes!!! All the nobiles were rather a midget size (under one foot tall) and I was told that is the new trend now.
It must be quite old as I see so many canes. First time seeing spotted leaves on these hybrids, so plucked all four of them off. hopefully I don't see them ever again.

Last, I picked up one phrag hybrid from Ecuagenera.
This is quite small (barely 8 inch tall) among any phrags I've seen, and it already had two buds and lots of baby shoots, so I was like what the h... my first time trying phrag. I already heard some negative stuff about growing this hybrid including the seller herself. hmmm

How was the show? I though the $25 entrance fee a bit steep.

Nice haul! I just got back from an orchid show too with new plants!

I wonder why your Phrag. would be a problem? It is Phrag. kovachii x Phrag. schlimii. Keep moist or wet.

I went on the first night, so I paid $35.
I drank some wine and had all the cheese, veggies, and crackers they had!

With the joke aside, I wish I didn't have to pay just to get in, but it was good, not great though.
I think it was mostly to raise extra money to pay for their renting the place. If it was free, I would have visited twice or more and spend that money to buy more plants. oh, well...

I pay about $20 to get in to NY botanical garden orchid show and that is worth $20!

The seller actually recommended me something else (saying she gets many customer complaining how difficult this hybrid is to grow), but I liked the flower picture of this one and it was already in bud with extra growths, I was like what the heck!

I know kovachii need rather cold water (like 55F at all time, which I can never do!) and extra pure water. This one is a hybrid, so I hope it is not as sensitive and do not require that cold water.
I will see and find out.
yes, I will post pictures when they open. It's a small plant but the flowers are supposed to be quite big so I'm excited.

Could you put the water for this plant in your refrigerator? Otherwise, being a hybrid may make it more tolerant as you say.

Adding cold water won't help much because the water will warm up fast. also a plant placed in warm setting getting a cold water might just shock them.

Today I noticed one of the two buds is blasting.
well, so much for the excitement of buying orchids in bud. lol

This might have been a mistake as I didn't plant on buying any phrag. just got hooked when I saw the flower picture of this plant. lol

The leaf tips are cut off by the grower, so I guess the plant had some kind of issues already.
The leaves show some light green/yellow patches which worry me. hmmm I'll have to keep an close eye on the any more color change on the leaves and also watch how the baby fans will fare.

Maybe I should have gotten the "easier" one she recommended, which was actually the first one I was fond of. but this one was prettier and smaller.

One of the vini paph is blasting its flower as well. the one with fugus leaves.

The other two new paphs seem to be donig fine in their new home.

Do you grow any phrags by the way?

I have 3 Phrags which all seem to do pretty good. I keep them all wet with a bit of water in a bottom dish. My pearcii is in bud for the first time since I got it a year ago so I am excited about that. I also have a Hanne Popow in bud and my Prag. Pink Fire was about to bloom for the 3rd time but dear hubby accidentally knocked it off the shelf and of course the spike snapped! I will eventually get a kovachii hybrid also.

I read a lot about how many people grow their phrags sitting in water.
The seller told me not to. I'm rather confused.

Breaking off spike is never fun, but since you had that plant in bloom tiwce before, maybe it's not the worst thing. Did you hit your husband for that? just kidding. lol

I hope mine survives. It is small unlike many phrag I've seen, which were huge!!! and lots of baby growths and (dying) spike.
