Default Disaster!

Well, I just had the ultimate disaster happen. My shelf fell.

Most of the orchids stayed in their pot but a few of my newer ones (both my new paphs from Ross at deerwood, ARGH!!!) and older mini phals got an impromptu unpotting.

I lost about 10 leaves (3 on my Phal. Burning Sands), a pbulb on my Pot. Burana Beauty and ultimately one NoID phal. It literally broke the crown off that one.

Took about two hours to clean up the mess. Got me pretty upset. Hopefully the orchids wont be too upset.

Its about a foot wide and 4 feet long. The bracket came out of the wall when the head of a screw failed! Seriously!?!??! Scared the crap out of me though.

I did find out that my Ang. dideri is making a move towards blooming as one of the points is progressing towards what looks like a leaf.

What a bummer! I can relate - I brought home my first yellow asian paph and as I was getting out of the car, the paph fell out of the box; now I had several other orc's not in bloom, and of course they stayed in the box. The paph had just opened and was very large, very yellow and very waxy-looking. I really noted this as the bloom lay on the driveway, separated from the plant by about 4 feet. AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!
But, as you found one moving into bloom, you sound like a 'glass half full' type of person and I commend you on that.
Too bad - hope you get things organized and the worst damage was done to your nerves, more than your orc's.
Steve

That sounds bad! Never heard of a screw failing like that though, unless the shelf was overloaded. Stuff like that sucks, and is always upsetting even though there's nothing that can be done about it after the fact. If you like that noid enough, hang o to it, maybe it'll sprout a basal keiki.

I never had a shelf fall, but one summer evening I had the winters open with the curtains pulled. I opened the front door and the wind that went through the apartment made the curtain whip violently- sweeping most of the orchids off the windowsill... Lots of broken leaves, and broke the growing spike off my favorite Phal.. Took ages to repot and clean the mess.

Ouch. I bet some choice words were coming to mind!

I've actually had the head of a screw come off before. It's really upsetting and frustrating.

Choice words were said.

I've got a metal rack from a friend coming in to replace the shelf. Gives me more room plus its sturdy.

I was in shock when the accident beheaded a NOID Phal.... hopefully you might have two plants as a result

make sure the metal rack is anchored well by using a post spotter marker
