Default orchids and plane travel(via vacation)

Many of you have mentioned how you would like to go visit a place where there are some very good greenhouses and amazing plants that are very tempting to buy. I would say that I am far from actually being in this position but if I was on vacation somewhere and I bought a few orchids how would I get them home safely without any kind of damage? Would they go in the baggage compartment or something? Can't really imagine that would be good for them .

thoughts?

You're better off carrying them inside the passenger compartment.

If you wrap them properly, baggage is fine, but that's a lot of work for a vacationer.

I always put them in my carry on bag with all appropriate paperwork. Of course this does limit you to very small plants. Anything big I have had the grower ship home to me.

Otherwise, the beagle brigade will sniff you out!

That makes perfect sense. I am mostly interested in tolumnia(very small) so I would just carry them on. How would you get the proper paperwork though? Btw the beagle brigade sure sounds funny. I bet they are cute too. I still wonder how best to package them while part of carry on though. Wouldn't want anything to go awry.

If you're travelling domestically only, no paperwork is needed. If you are going out of the US and want to bring plants back, you'll need an import permit from the USDA APHIS and CITES and phytosanitary docs from the origin.

If you are traveling from Hawaii you will need a phyto cert.
