I water about every week to two, depending upon if the mix looks dry or not. Honestly, I've not had an overwatering problem with my method. The issue to me was repotting mid year in 2011 and not realizing how thin the rots were. It suffered really really bad after that. In fact, I had to cut many and root them in water to get this for this year, lol... I'm not sure that water is the problem given the fact that you can root by sticking the base into water. Not sure what was up with your scenario, but I'm also not a pro at these either.
