I see they were able to do their job by getting people talking about the show!
The entertainment industry likes to take certain liberties under the guise of creative license to handle certain details that are insignificant to the moving along of the story they want to tell. Apparently they've done it again!
Of course the reasons for not portraying the real
Coryanthes speciosa is as stated by some in this thread already...
1. The producers may not know what a
Coryanthes speciosa is nor would want to shell out the $ from the show's budget to get one.
2. The general public doesn't necessarily know what a
Coryanthes speciosa is, unless they are an orchid hobbyist.
Most actors don't know what a
Coryanthes speciosa is, let alone pronounce it.
3. It takes some skill to grow
Coryanthes speciosa properly, which not very many people in production want to nor necessarily have the time to deal with.
4. It's not convenient for either the props department or the set dressers to specifically get a real
Coryanthes speciosa, let alone one that is already in bloom.
They do, however, have a few props Phals or Cymbidiums at their disposal and a few silk or plastic flowers to just go ahead and fudge it.
After all, the "in" joke in the film and television industry is to, "Just fix it in post [production]." Of course, things like this are always a good, fun talking point for some people.
