You are far away from the shows! And I though 5 (Edmonton) and 6 1/2 hours (Calgary) was far! I've been to Thunder Bay (long ago) and I would have thought there would be more orchid activity. It's a nice place. I still have some cousins and an aunt there. Hope you make it to the show in Winnipeg

Yeah, we are kinda in the middle of nowhere! lol. Thunder Bay is definitely beautiful, especially in the summer, but I have noticed that it is very behind on everything! I'm not sure why that is, but I have heard other people say the same thing. The super sad thing for an orchid lover is, as long as I have been growing orchids, I have yet to meet a single person who grows them here as a hobby!! Actually, most people I have talked to about orchids didnt even know what one was! As far as orchid shows go, the actual closest show would be Duluth (3 hours) or Minneapolis (6 hours), but I dont consider them because I cant bring plants home without the paperwork.

Haha!!! Believe it or not, there is a way around the need for CITIES and phytosanitary certificates! You can bring up to 50 orchids with you from the US into Canada as long as they are with the importer at the time of crossing, and are not for commercial resale!

I actually tried that in my early days of orchid collecting, and they still confiscated them! They didnt seem to know what they were talking about and actually asked me at one point if they were real plants or plastic! I told them that the import law said I could bring up to 50 across with me if they were travelling with me, and they freaked out and said I cant tell them what to do. It resulted in my plants being incinerated, me being put on the "Watch" list, and plenty of tears. I dont even bother anymore. I had no problem with ordering from Hausermanns and Orchid Seed Bank Project, though. I guess if they have official paper work telling them what to do then its ok. Its a sore subject with me and I easily start a rant about my ridiculous encounter.

Cody, it seems to me like you do need a Phyto sanitary certificate and possibly Cites if you read this page: I hate wading thru all this mumbo jumbo, but that's what I get from this document:

I'm from Southern Ontario and we thought that it was too cold there. I can't imagine living with the kind of temperatures you are talking about.
I do miss the orchid shows in Southern Ontario though. It was so nice to be able to satisfy the craving in the middle of winter. Why do the stores only sell phals and cyms?

Hmmm, it kinda makes sense, but from the info I got from here, Canadian Food Inspection Agency, it doesn't seem like you need anything from CFIA, which would be what the phyto is from. But then on the COC website, it says everything needs one, which isn't what I have heard! Ugh, why does this need to be some complex! Another thing was that on the COC article, the writer said he was importing plants from the 17th WOC in Malaysia, and I am talking about the US! This is crazy. . .

Here in New Jersey I'm trying to stretch the 'shipping season' as much as possible. I've been ordering anything and everything on my want list to where I'm finally satisfied. I received everything except for 4 paphs which will hopefully come next week.

Despite the cold weather I have a few things that are keeping me sane during the winter months. I'm working Floral on Valentines Day at my job where we always receive a nice selection of orchids just in time for the holiday (everything from phals, to dens, to cyms). So I'm bound to pick up something there.

I've also purchased tickets for the Philadelphia Flower Show in the first week of March, and a week and a half after that I'm heading to Florida for a week!

So all in all, if time continues to fly at it's current rate ... it'll be spring once again before we know it.

On my link not too far down under the bold CFIA heading, there is a section called 'Importations from the Continental U.S.A." It says a CFIA cert. is not needed for most things but a Phyto San. is.

Whatever the rule, I think I would want one just in case what happened to Cavs n Orchids happens again!

LOL Poor baby ....try minus 45 BEFORE windchill (which makes it minus 60 or less )....Thats what I get for living in zone2 I guess LOL
