Compared to you poor Canadians, I'm having balmy weather - only -16C. It will get colder though and I'm not looking forward to it. When it gets really cold, the City requires you to leave a water faucet running, or else the water pipes under the street will freeze. When that happens, it's a royal pain and you're fined $150. How many orchids can I buy for $150? lol

My weather is even balmier (-2 to 5C) with not a single snowflake in sight so far this winter, but still too cold for me to risk ordering orchids. I'm also going nuts, I NEED more! And it's precisely when you know that you can't order that all of a sudden you MUST have certain plants.
I wish we at least had some snow like you Canadians, that makes winter so much more bearable, because I love love snow!

I really can't do much complaining this year, its been beautiful right up til the end of dec, then once jan hit well it turn on us abit I don't believe we've anything other then -35 not bad for us here in zone 5.
I love the snow but dislike the ice storms we have, makes it very difficult to walk in without tripping onto you're face. I like my teeth and I'd like to keep them in my mouth
As far as the orchid shopping goes ... I'm spoiled, its just 1\2 drive to get a fix depending on the weather of course.
I will visit the local greenhouse this weekend to get some much needed supplies (thats gonna set me back on some doe)
I love my orchids in the winter time the most, keeps me busy and sane. Its truely a wonderful hobby!!
Stay warm folks

I feel your pain, I guess I can at least be grateful i'm on the island where so far the lowest we've gotten is -20. If only I was back home in the states I could look forward to the plethora of shows throughout the midwest in the coming weeks.

Haha!!! Yeah, its been close to -48C for the last couple of mornings!!! I didn't have too much of a withdrawal because I spent a month or so building my new plant stand, and I have an OS right in my city. I am also placing a pre-order with them from Ten Shin for the Calgary show in Feb. That is going to be a great fix!!!

Holy cats! -48! That's like vacuum of space cold. And here I am whining about +9F. There's a healthy dose of perspective for you.
STAY WARM! Spring's coming.

It would be equally nice to have a local retail greenhouse that has a selection of genera to choose from. I started out with the grocery store Phals and yes they can be elegant, but they just dont cut it for me anymore. Maybe its paying $40 for a half dead plant that did it. Having too much time on my hands ends up meaning a huuuuge spring order, which does make the waiting and anticipation totally worth it! I have a list for Hausermann's as soon as the weather is safe, now I need to give myself a limit, because there are too many nice plants to choose from!! Cant wait for spring!![COLOR="Silver"]

We're 650 km from Paramount-the closest orchid retailer. But we do have a society and bring in speakers who sell plants most of the time. Could you drive to an orchid show? There are a good number of vendors at them and you can usually pre-order from them. Ontario has quite a few shows.

Just thinking about those temps make me appreciate Ohio. Ohio is a nice balmy 25' F today. My cure? Our society is getting ready for a March 3 show so, of course, next week I'll be busy putting up fliers and trying to get sponsers.

I am actually hoping to make it to the Manitoba Orchid Society's annual show in march this year. The closest show in Ontario is at least 18 hours away, but Winnipeg is only 9. I've done it once before and it was spectacular!! Talk about orchid paradise!
