After numerous times trying to read a tag and knocking over all kinds plants, I now rewrite the tag with the name on both sides so it's easy to read. Jim.

The most major mistake I have ever made with my orchids is..

I made a mistake once of putting the shade cloth on the inside of the greenhouse and shutting the doors and windows entirely. That particular day turned out to be hotter then usual by California standards.
I was busy that day..I wasn't able to go out and check on them until late in the afternoon.
I came in the room and the dial said it was 120 degrees. I'm guessing it was much hotter, as the dial stops at 120!
Half my orchids were cooked! All my Den's leaves were white. The Phals had all shriveled...
There wasn't a single orchid that hadn't been damaged in less then 8 hours worth of heat.

Well, all but one.. I had one Vanda that seemed to look at me and say..What? Did I miss something?

Over the past few days, I've been spotting a number of 'chids in spike! One of them is a Den that I bought at Redlands in May 2006 as a seedling...so exciting to see a spike!!!

The spike was growing towards the back of a middle shelf so it needed to be turned around...can you see where this is going?

SNAP!!! No more spike!!!

...and the long wait begins again
WOW Sue,I just can't believe it when things like that happen, even when I looking at it. First I feel Next depression sets in. Then
The cure is to buy a new one!!!!

It'll grow again
I've been finding spikes all over the place so I didn't take this one too badly

Now that is one smart idea......except I can see a problem for me. I always write the flowering data on the back of the tag. Does that mean I would need 2 tags?

DJ, OMG what a costly mistake!!!! Thats like me accidentaly poisoning my frogs (God Forbid!) thinking I was giving them something good to eat. Thats always my fear.

Jim, I agree, that is a good idea.

Default So, I figure it's time for this thread to be bumped back into circulation :)

It's been a while and with all of our new members...and "older" members having new plants, there's got to be some new stories...right?

Default Remember to take off your jewelry...

I've got one. I posted this in my intro thread, but it fits better here! Four years ago my DH bought me a Psychopsis Mendenhall "Hildos" for my birthday. It wasn't blooming, but I thought (naively) that surely it would bloom within a year like all my other 'chids. Wrong. Apparently psychopsis are finicky. I finally magically discovered the right combination of water, light, etc. and a spike appeared! Rejoice! For a month I was sooooo careful. The spike grew steadily, reaching 7 or 8 inches high. Both of us were so excited that this special orchid was finally going to bloom.

I'm sure you can see where this is going.

While reaching past to pick up one of my cattleyas today, my ring caught the end of the spike and snapped it right off.

FOUR YEARS.

I'm not ashamed to say I cried a little.
