Hi guys. I know I've been absent from the forum lately...lots of stuff going on, both profesionally and personally, which as kept me away from the boards.
Just wanted to check in and say hi.
Just a small update on my orchids---I am updaing my orchid inventory list (finally got around to it).
I now have 20 Laelia anceps!!! I didn't realize until today how many I've accumulated. Some are itty bitty baby seedlings, some are more mature, and some of them are big mommas that are gloriously in spike!!! One is in bloom(although only one flower this time).
The rains have made them get fat and healthy and with tons of roots, and 6 of my 20 are in spike (one with a DOUBLE spike!) I'm getting nervous!!
As far as the rest of my orchids--most are doing well. I lost some divisions I bought in May to rot, unfortunately, but I still have a couple of divisions of those left. Also, some ants have moved in (trying to get rid of those) and they munched on the spike of one of my Laeliocattleyas!! BOO!! Maybe next year. At least the thing is putting out roots and growths (I see two new active eyes).
I'm happy to report that I think I got the hang of terete and semi-terete leafed vandas. I stuck a bunch of Vanda Miss Joaquim in a net pot, put in some broken shards of clay and mixed that up with Hydroton, and the things are taking off!!! I waited about a month to see if the first basket was going to do well, and since it did, I went ahead and put up a second, 8-inch basket today. Same potting medium: shards of clay pots, and some hydroton to squeeze into the crevices.
I'm also having great luck with the Cattleya guatemalensis (I have 6 of them). Those suckers grow fast!! Cathy gracefully sent me one of her divisions from a salmon colored C. guatemalensis, and it's doing fantastically with its sisters.
Oh, and My Aerides Punchinello is about to bloom!! Whoo hoo--after having that thing for about 2 years, i can see about 20 buds!!!
Haven't been buying much lately--just odds and ends.
I hope everyone is well.
Love,
m.
