Psychology question: why are orchids addictive?! Male
Cool Psychology question: why are orchids addictive?!

Alright everyone, let's put on our psychology hats and get to the bottom of this. Because, let's face it, orchids have somehow hacked the human brain and put some kind of spell over us all. I do think it's hilarious how we are all so addicted, obsessive at times. But seriously, this is a phenomenon of sorts, right? Do gardeners get obsessive over varieties of petunias? Have to have every color that's out there? I'm not so sure. On the other hand, I tend to have a rather obsessive personality when it comes to my hobbies over the years. So maybe orchids lure in obsessive personalities? But I know I've read plenty of posts by newbies that seem to get blindsided at how quickly they have become hooked. That's all I got.

Ok, so let's solve this mystery! Share what you think the reasons are for orchids being such an addictive pastime.

I like being able to grow plants that have such beautiful blooms - and it's great that so many do well on windowsills! And I think it's extremely gratifying when you get that first home grown spike (that's for each plant you have!)

I find it strange that anyone who gardens doesn't grow orchids. There's such a mystique surrounding them.

Psychology question: why are orchids addictive?! Female
Default Psychology question

I'm addictive about all plants I like. Orchids, ferns-esp. Platycerium, rhipsalis, cactus, Crinum and anything else in the Amaryllis family. There is a seemingly unending variety out there and the newest acquisition is always a thrill.
However, I must admit, orchids seem to be the most addictive. I have many more orchid plants than, probably, the rest put together. And, that is probably because there are more varieties of orchids than other plant families. So, more possibilities for feeding our madness.

I would say it is their beauty and diversity as well as the challenge that they represent in growing them.
