Go to Ivar's Salmon House up on north Lake Union. The King Salmon done over and alder fire is unbeatable.

Thanks Ray. I am looking for other things to ndo to. My girls going to a writers thing up there a me and the kids get todo what ever. So i'm looking for orchids and anything fun or wildlfe that we would not see in nebraska.

Hey there,

I am in the Seattle area, and while Emerald City orchids is okay, I can strongly recommend Seattle Orchids. They have a good selection of species, and show by appointment. I saw orchids I had never heard of in their grow-room. Emerald City has a decent selection of hybrids, a few species, and I have found their staff to be pretty uneducated when I have visited (confusing hybrids and species, making weird excuses for leaf damage). Seattle Orchids was clearly run by a pair of passionate hobbyists.

I would also suggest the Woodland Park Zoo, it has some cool northwest animals, and their indoor exhibit also has a good supply of orchids hanging here and there. The Seattle Aquarium is another fun stop, and easy to get to from Pike Place market, another famous Seattle locale.

The UW Botany greenhouse is another good option for seeing orchids as well as many other plants. They even have a few terrariums with poison dart frogs! Unfortunately, you just missed the blooming of the corpse flower (Amorphophallus titanum), which opened about 2 weeks ago. The UW also has an arboretum which is a real treat to walk through, and a Japanese garden, which charges a small entrance fee. There are also several Japanese and Chinese gardens throughout the Seattle area.

Golden Gardens park in Ballard is a nice place to spend some time on the beach.

If the weather is cruddy, try the Seattle center, which has the Experience Music Project and the Pacific Science Center. The science center is particularly fun, and has a butterfly house which is open year round.

Hopefully you get some great weather while you are up here. This is the best time of year for weather, but it hasn't really been cooperating lately...

I used to spend about 6 weekly trips a year in Seattle, and somehow got great weather most of the time. Beautiful city, and you cannot beat the sound.

I have no recollection of where they were, but viewing fish ladders loaded with soon-to-be-spawning salmon was really cool. (I've lived mostly on the east coast, so that's not something we see that often.)

The fish ladders were probably at Ballard Locks. They're official name is the Hiram A. Chittenden Locks, but everyone calls them the Ballard Locks. There's also a small but rather impressive botanic garden right next to the locks. It has a little something for everyone, the gardens, the salmon, boats, and usually a few harbor seals. You might be able to see a few sockeye salmon, really late steelhead, or really early chinook salmon.
