I'll email the same person who had my plants. They used to be the os prez but now they coordinate and setup at different shows. I'll Email then like Paul suggested.

I'm sorry about your plants; and I would definitely mention this to someone. It sounds like more damage than one can reasonably expect.
Which, is why Maria will never lend out one of her plants to be displayed. NEVER.
I look at it this way: my plants cost a lot, not only in terms of money, but time and attention that I've given them. Not to sound like a prima donna, but I've no idea how other people care for their stuff, or how "hygenic" their growing habits are. Moreover, I second the poster who said that he doesn't care much for displays. I don't either. I think they look unnatural, they are too busy and well, they just don't showcase individual plants AT ALL.
Sorry for my rant, but people are just inconsiderate sometimes.

Thanks ms Maria. Since receiving these back I've totally changed my views. I do like displays once in a while. But if I'm not at the show I can't even enjoy it or my plants!!! How bunk is that? I think it's a better idea to make my own display, If I want to have a display at all! I know someone who does that. Never again though will I let my orchids go through this?

Isn't it a shame that because of rough orchid handling, people are turned off of contributing in the future. But I don't blame you. I hope your society knows this. There may have been one person who was careless and that ruins it for everyone.
This past Feb. our members had to travel in a poorly heated cube van over 500 km on a minus 36C day with wind chills at -44C (at -40 Celcius and Farenheit are equal) to an orchid show in Edmonton with members' plants. Then they had to be unloaded into the building and out after the show and taken home on roads where people were in the ditch and rolling vehicles. Not a single orchid was damaged or frozen. So if it can be done here in those conditions, no need for such excessive damage anywhere.

yeah. i'd like to stay positive. but ultimately, its not worth it for me to contribute, especially if my plants arent going to be treated with care.
im not sure about for other people, and im sure its different when there are lots of plants to be taken care of, but when im handling someone else's plants, i try to be extra careful. because i'd rather let the owner be the one to damage them.. not me

Bob, at our OS AOS show if we have a certain number of plants to display we get our own table and we are responsible for our own setup/takedown. I like that because then my plants aren't touching your plants....
You really have to keep an eagle eye on the public in the show area though. I once caught a lady trying to break off a piece of a show plant to take home. Her entry fee was refunded and she was escorted out of the building. The other thing they just can't resist is touching the flowers. We patrol the show floor vigilantly and keep the touchy feely stuff to a minimum.
Only once did I send a plant out of town to a different show. It came back in fine condition and with a blue ribbon.

The Paph may rebloom, the yellow ribbon will not. I really do not get all those competitions! I agree with the person that agrees with me about displays. Actually she made some good points. They mix and match plants that do not grow together. I remember I saw some amazing Laelia blooms on some setup and I could not really see the plant itself. But I go to the conservatory of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden every week and I love looking at aerial roots hanging from above or some orchids growing in what is an approximation of a natural setup. I understand that it is nice to go to a show and see plants I have never seen but I like them better in a pot on a shelf and I can take a look at how it grows.

i agree, they are not natural. and it bothers me when they cover all the pots in dirt and moss. as if they grew like that in nature! ha!
but i do like the awards and ribbons for the individual plants. idk it kind of gives me a sense of validity. and i think its fun to have plants judges against others of the type. and them the possibility of AOS awards (although it will be a long while before i get anywhere close)
bottom line- there are somethings that bug me about shows. but at the end of the day, im not opposed to them. just opposed to beat up plants.
